Missouri Lawmakers Enact 3-Day Waiting Period For Abortion
Source: HuffPo
Missouri lawmakers enacted one of the nation's most stringent abortion waiting periods Wednesday, overriding a veto of legislation that will require women to wait 72 hours after consulting with a doctor before ending a pregnancy.
The vote by Missouri's Republican-led Legislature overrules the veto of Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon, who had denounced the measure as "extreme and disrespectful" toward women because it contains no exception for cases of rape or incest.

Missouri's new law will be the second most-stringent behind South Dakota, where its 72-hour wait can sometimes extend even longer because weekends and holidays are not counted. Utah is the only other state with a 72-hour delay, but it grants exceptions for rape, incest and other circumstances.
Missouri lawmakers specifically rejected an amendment earlier this year that would have granted exceptions for rape and incest. Abortion opponents argued that it would have diminished the value of some lives depending on how they were conceived.

(70 posts)Moving boldly into the 14th Century, the "Show Me," state demonstrates that they don't have the courage to look at reality in America. I guess we now know the object of education reform in Missouri, it's to make stupid people not feel so different... and bigots proud to be Missourians!!!

(51,523 posts)The later an abortion is performed, the riskier it is for a woman--although never as risky as actually giving birth.
This law degrades women, as if women go get abortions without knowing what they're doing.
The Republican Missouri legislators are evil incarnate.

(93 posts)Imagine if they enacted a 3-day waiting period to start prenatal care. After all, continuing a pregnancy is a serious decision.

Why don't women start charging the state for pain and suffering for every pregnancy. File a massive class action lawsuit sort of thing. Any woman who gets pregnant should be supported, compensated and paid for any permanent injury that results from the pregnancy (depends for life for this rendered incontinent, for instance). Then if they decide to terminate, the state saves money....see how fact this sort of stuff would turn around.

(18,866 posts)They also overturned the veto on open carry so now Missouri is an open carry state except in cities where it is outlawed. And I think it is outlawed in Kansas City. I know the mayor is really trying to keep guns out of the city.
