Republican attorney general (NE) hopeful tried to head off Heidemann protection order

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Robynn Tysver

The Republican candidate for attorney general tried to intervene on behalf of former Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann after his sister sought a protection order.

Exactly what was said is a matter of dispute, but the call from Doug Peterson and a subsequent call by another attorney are examples of how Heidemann tried to end the matter privately before it went to court.

Peterson threatened a “defamation lawsuit” if the sister proceeded with her request for a protection order against Heidemann, said Steve Mercure, Lois Bohling’s attorney.

Mercure, who practices in Tecumseh, Nebraska, said he told Peterson that such threats wouldn’t deter his client.
