CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Odile blazed a trail of destruction through Mexico's Baja California Peninsula that leveled everything from ramshackle homes to big box stores and luxury hotels, leaving roads and entire neighborhoods as disaster zones Monday.

The storm, which made landfall near Cabo San Lucas the previous night as a powerful Category 3 hurricane, toppled trees, power poles and road signs along the main highway, which at one point was swamped by rushing floodwaters. Countless windows were blown out of rental cars and high-end hotel rooms, and resort facades crumbled to the ground.

"It's the entire corridor" between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, said Deneb Poli, a medical worker at the Hotel Melia Cabo Real. She said all the hotel's guests and employees were fine, but electricity and phone lines were cut and cellphone coverage was spotty. "There are parts of hotels that are completely collapsed. ... The damage is pretty extensive."

The Los Cabos international airport remained closed to all flights on Monday.

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Odile raked the Baja California Peninsula with strong winds and heavy rains early Monday as locals and tourists in the resort area of Los Cabos began to emerge from shelters and assess the damage.

The extent of Odile's impact was still not clear before daybreak, but the storm severely damaged hotel lobbies and facades, shattered windows and left streets full of debris. The windows at the area's Westin Hotel had been blown out.

The newspaper Tribuna de los Cabos reported people being injured by flying glass, power lines and traffic signals down throughout the city, and a fire at the Cascadas resort on Medano Beach. No details about the blaze were immediately available.

By early Monday, the storm's maximum sustained winds were near 115 mph (185 kph) as it moved over the peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane. It was centered about 140 miles (230 kilometers) east-southeast of Cabo San Lazaro.

left 3.75" of rain in my neighborhood of Tucson AZ and if another one comes this way, I'm going to be bracing for it. The flooding around my home was pretty dramatic and I've barely been able to clean up the mess. Sigh.

Didn't just move here cold (pun), love it here and really enjoy rainy weather, so adios bloody noses and bleeding fingers. If it wasn't for family considerations I would have been here years ago.

There is a lot of damage. We don't know about casualties yet.

It is rather disturbing that the US seems to be unconcerned because there is unlikely to be much impact on the US.

Typical and sad.
