Escaped school shooter had pitchfork, patrol says

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The school shooter who briefly escaped from an Ohio prison last week had a pitchfork when he was captured, the state patrol said Monday as newly released records added to the picture of an inmate frequently in trouble behind bars.
T.J. Lane, convicted of killing three students at Chardon High School in the Cleveland area in 2012, did not threaten officers with the pitchfork, and it isn't known where he got it from, said patrol Lt. Craig Cvetan.
New discipline records released Monday by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction show that Lane argued with instructors in education courses at Allen Correctional Institution, was found with marijuana in his system, gave himself three tattoos in violation of prison rules and worked out in a weight room despite a direct order not to.
"Another day of Mr. Lane refusing to do anything in education," an official said in a conduct report on Aug. 22, 2013.

He'll learn some humility in Supermax. The Lifers there have nothing to lose and won't appreciate this punk's attitude. (NOT making prison-rape jokes. I'm thinking after getting his ass-kicked from some Lifer, he'll be a bit less cocky.)

His behaviors are bizarre. He is suffering from some form of undiagnosed and/or untreated mental illness. A very high percentage of inmates in the Ohio prison system are mentally ill. Thanks to the near destruction of Ohio's state mental health system, there are thousands of people suffering from mental illnesses that never receive treatment. Parents of minors who lack private health coverage for mental health treatments are left with no where to get help until the minor acts out in a way that gets them sent to prison.
Mr. Lane is the poster child for the failure to treat mental illness. I am appalled at the callous and ignorant statements about this young man in this thread. He is a danger to society, because our society has chosen to not fund mental health care. He is just as much a victim as the victims he murdered. Blaming victims of mental illness lets the corrupt politicians off the hook for their refusal to act in responsible fashion for the citizens of Ohio.
If Mr. Lane had been properly treated when he first started exhibiting symptoms of mental illness, his three victims would still be alive and Mr. Lane would have a chance at being a productive citizen. Now he will be a ward of the state for the rest of his life in Ohio's ever deteriorating prison system.
Ohio was a leader in mental health care in the late 19th and early 20th century. Ohio's mental health care system was severely neglected then dismantled mainly by Republican politicians with some collusion of certain corrupt Democratic politicians. Ohio is now a national disgrace for its callous treatment of the mentally ill.
My heart breaks for the families of his victims.
