As many as 36 children were reported to have died excruciating deaths last night after receiving tainted measles vaccines under a UN-sponsored programme in the rebel-held north of Syria.

Many opposition sympathisers circulated images of the dying children on social media sites with suggestions the vaccine had been adulterated with cyanide, possibly by regime agents, to undermine confidence in the opposition.

Idlib is one of the few strongholds of a Western-back rebel movement that has largely been eclipsed by the nihilist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) or al-Qaeda’s Jabhat Al-Nusra in non-regime parts of Syria.

Mohammad Mowas, a Syrian doctor working in Turkey, said the reported symptoms were a gradual slowdown in the heart rate as the infants turned blue and were consistent with cyanide poisoning. “This looks like deliberate attempt to spike the vaccines,” he said.

Two former Merck virologists are in the process of a lawsuit against Merck for fraudulently falsifying the efficacy of the MMR vaccine by using animal antibodies (humans don't product) to show a 95% efficacy . The virologists stated that they, along with other scientists, were pressured by Merck to commit fraud and by doing so became a monopoly According to the virologists, the FDA knew about this. This along with the CDC scientist coming forward a few weeks ago to admit that he left data out a 2003 study linking a 260% increase in Autism to the African American babies when given the MMR vaccine on schedule. The head of the CDC back then Julie Golberding is now the President of Vaccines at Merck. Kind of sickening. Kids getting all of the risk with none of the benefit. I would think ANY parent would go "nuts" knowing that the QC of a vaccine that goes in to infants isn't the top priority rather just the money it can make.

At least 34 children have died in rebel-held Syria after being injected with contaminated measles vaccines, the rebel government said on Tuesday, warning that the deaths might be caused by saboteurs linked to the Assad regime.

The death toll is expected to rise, with many children from eight towns in Idlib province, north-west Syria, still in intensive care on Tuesday night.

Parents accused opposition health authorities of failing to store the vaccines properly, and of supplying out-of-date medication. But opposition officials denied accusations of negligence, saying that the vaccines came from Unicef and WHO, via the Turkish government, and that the same batch had successfully vaccinated 60,000 schoolchildren in 30 locations in recent days.

Instead, the opposition health ministry attributed the deaths to foul play, with health minister Adnan Hazouri promising to resign if an investigation upheld allegations of negligence. "Primary investigations point to a limited security breach by vandals likely connected to the regime, which has been attempting to target the medical sector in Free Syria in order to spread chaos," the ministry said in a statement.

Muscle relaxant given to up to 75 children in an error perhaps caused by the similarities of drug packaging

Medics carrying out a measles vaccination in northern Syria instead administered an anaesthetic to up to 75 infants, killing 15, a preliminary investigation into their deaths has found.

The report says an anaesthetic, atracuriam, which is used as a muscle relaxant in surgery was given to the infants, perhaps mixed with the measles vaccine, which had been delivered by aid agencies conducting a mass vaccination program in opposition parts of northern Syria.

The error is believed to have occurred because the packaging of the anaesthetic drug was similar to that of the solution used to mix the measles vaccination.

The drug is usually fatal when given to infants in the doses administered, but older children can survive low dosages due to their higher body weights. The fatalities occurred in children between 6 and 18 months.

The children all presented symptoms within half an hour of being given the drug and were suffering from diarrhoea, shock and respiratory failure. Most of the fatalities were dead before they reached a hospital, according to a local activist.

Syrian opposition officials have ordered an urgent probe into the deaths and the health minister in the interim administration resigned on Wednesday. Earlier reports had suggested the toll may have been as high as 34 and that deliberate attempts may have been made to poison the children.

However inquiries are now focusing on clinical negligence and have vowed to prosecute anyone found responsible.
