Woman faces sentencing for buying killer his guns
| September 17, 2014 | Updated: September 17, 2014 12:02am

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Federal prosecutors are seeking an extra-long sentence for a woman who bought the guns used by her former neighbor to kill two upstate New York firefighters on Christmas Eve.

The U.S. Attorney's Office is asking for a 10-year sentence Wednesday for Dawn Nguyen (WEHN), who's already in state prison for up to four years on related charges.

The 10 years is longer than the eight- to 14-month sentence her lawyer says sentencing guidelines suggest, but prosecutors say it's justified.

Nguyen has admitted to buying a semi-automatic rifle and shotgun in 2010 for William Spengler Jr., a felon prohibited from owning weapons.

charged as an accessory to any crime that the weapon is used in. That probably will never happen.

Strong sentences for the straw purchase of firearms would help to reduce gun violence in our inner cities.

I also feel that severe punishment for straw purchasing firearms would be supported by legal gun owners.

They know what they're doing in most cases. Investigate and charge anyone selling to straw purchasers.

She knowingly bought weapons for a prohibited person and should be also charged for the use of them in the crime.

10 years seems a little light, but I suppose it's better than 10 months.

the killer wouldn't need a straw buyer. He could buy the weapon from an individual from an add in the paper or gun show.

was prohibited, that would be breaking most state laws. It is called a intrastate private sale and is up to the state to regulate. Gun show or not.

If the seller knew, the law was broken regardless. Say they were friends. It is still a state issue and it is up to the state to enforce or update the law.

for a person that is selling a firearm on gun list.org or in the parking lot or a gun show to know anything about the buyer. But the sale is a safe bet if the seller doesn't ask if buyer if qualified to purchase. If your state allows individual sales with out a background check, vote for those that demand it or push for a state ballot referendum. Polls show that a majority of gun owner, even NRA members favor it. Looks like Bill Gates can outspend the NRA on that issue.

I am a long time gun owner, have a CCW, and usually vote for the RKBA candidate. But this woman knew that she was buying guns for a felon, and did it anyway. She knowingly broke the law, and endangered people. She also painted honest gun owners and buyers as criminals when she did this. We actually have some decent laws, and if we all obey them, we could take a big bite out of crime. This is one area that gun owners and gun banners can agree on.

Note that it is the ATF and the National Shooting Sports Foundation that are working together to promote this.

I will repeat it in the RKBA group. I expect it will either be studiously ignored or met with
bafflegab from the usual 'gun safety advocates'.

GOOD. Don't know what the charges were, but should have included accessory to murder. 10 years isn't long enough.
