percentages don't change that much, going forward.
I've seen this as an election count official.

Once the polls close, the early voting ballots are tallied,
and the percentage numbers only deviate less than a percentage point from the initial count,
for all remaining ballots.

I've seen it in multiple elections, and I'm still amazed and frustrating at times, that these
numbers just don't move that much any more.

I believe the Scots voted against seceding from the UK.

Thu Sep 18, 2014, 09:26 PM
Sep 2014

it would be a very decent size sample. However, it is not a sample at all, but the full count for a few places.

The best use of this would be if it were known that those places were more or less likely to vote no in the polling. Then they could at least balance it against what was expected in these places.
(ie if just Vermont was counted in the US on a national vote (yes I know there are none), would it be meaningful that the progressive liberal position was ahead?)

Final count 3,619,915 votes counted
NO 2,001,926 55.30%
YES 1,617,989 44.70%

When only 35,000 votes counted
NO 19,036 53.80%
YES 16,350 46.20%

Delta change
NO +1.5%
YES -1.5%

So from the original numbers, it was more than the 1% threshold that I
had predicted, but not by much.

YES needed almost a 4% swing, which is nearly impossible to do unless
Diebold machines are used to count the ballot, then up to 6% swing is
in play until the vote is certified.

This is way to close for assumption of 'victory' either way.

Ah well. If they think this NO vote will give them any additional political leverage, I think they are sadly mistaken.

ETA -- Glasgow (biggest county) came in on the last count -- Yes won 53-47. Realistically, unless Edinburgh votes overwhelmingly "Yes", it looks like Scotland will remain part of the UK -- JMHO.

What? They were paper ballots? OK, so I wonder how much it cost the Koch brothers to bribe all those election officials?

Yes, I am a bit disappointed, but not surprised by the result. It was a clean and fair vote by people who have a lot more knowledge and skin in the game than I do. The land of my ancestors has shown itself proudly.

My Mum and StepDad ( in their 70s) in Aberdeen are very "NO" ( Salmond is viewed as an arse )

My sister and I are a bit torn , hearts say yes , but head says no

Her sons are both very pro-Yes

So...give it another 10-15 years.... its gonna have a better shot at it.

I'm not sure having an independence referendum every 10-15 years is a good idea. It creates decisiveness and wastes resources. But a lot will depend on whether Westminster follows through on promised reforms.

Their number of councils reporting for Yes would have been in the minority. Yes support tended to be concentrated in higher population areas.

But yeah, the polls seem to have underestimated the No vote significantly. My Scots friends said that a number of people they know who didn't say a word through the whole campaign were No voters in the end. Maybe they are the kind of people who would have refused to answer a poll? And these are proud Scots I'm talking about.... The kind of people who wear kilts frequently, so they definitely see themselves as Scots... But also as British.

From interviews, I got the impression many were deciding at the last minute. I think human nature, in such instances, tends to be to stay with the status quo.
