Lafayette judge rules Louisiana same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional

District Judge Edward Rubin ruled today that the ban on same-sex marriage in Louisiana is unconstitutional.

Rubin's decision in a Lafayette courtroom will not be public record until Tuesday morning, but the state Attorney General's Office confirmed that it has already initiated an appeal.

Rubin's ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by Angela Marie Costanza and Chasity Shanelle Brewer asking that the state recognize the marriage certificate the couple obtained in California.

The current ban on same-sex marriage in Louisiana does not recognize marriage certificates from other states.
