(24,470 posts)It's too commonplace these days. We are a violent nation and are sadly getting immune to these incidents.

(4,788 posts)a teacher from Utah was profiled. She carries a loaded pistol to school each day and the parents and administration didn't know. The brief segment showed her being "trained" to shoot an intruder. She stood 9 feet from a paper target, stuck her butt out while extending the gun and yelling "stop". Then she shot. You could see her hands trembling and the gun wobbling. Her so-called instructor told the news person that it was adrenalin making her shake and that it was a good thing because it meant she was on top of things and would do well - I have to say it looked like she missed the target, although it could have been that because she was so close, the bullet passed through the target and hit the earthen berm behind it, which is why you could see a puff of dirt. Oh and I should mention that her gun was pink. By appearing on the news, she was "outing" herself to the school and parents and she was a bit worried, but felt she had to do it because of her rights. It was a frightening segment.

(16,199 posts)Most bullets are traveling so fast and transfer so little energy on impact that the target doesn't move at all. They just pass right through.

(4,788 posts)As I mentioned it was a paper or cardboard target, so the bullet could very well have passed through and hit the backstop. It was just disconcerting to see a little puff of dirt that made it look like she had missed. I should add that they never showed the target she was shooting at so you could see the score, so to speak. Just depressing, that this teacher thinks she would be able to retrieve her handgun from the zipped compartment in her handbag, which would be in one of the drawers of her desk, in time to shoot a bad guy, in the unlikely event one ever did enter her classroom, before he or she could act.

Here's a similar story about a shooting by a terminated UPS worker two years ago:
http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/story/19665477/ups-among-5-dead-in-minneapolis-office-shooting
And here's a FedEx story from last spring:

On edit: My error -- the shooting in 2012 did kill a UPS driver, but he just happened to be parked at a business whose disgruntled employee did the shooting.
