Scholar behind anti-Obama film gets probation

Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — A conservative scholar behind a high-grossing film condemning President Barack Obama has been sentenced to five years of probation in his campaign finance case.

Dinesh D'Souza (dih-NEESH' duh-SOO'-zuh), of San Diego, also was fined $30,000 on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court. He'll be required to live for eight months at a confinement center in San Diego and was ordered to do community service.

He pleaded guilty in May to charges he arranged for straw donors to contribute to New York Republican Wendy Long's failed U.S. Senate bid.

D'Souza was a policy analyst under President Ronald Reagan and is a prolific author known most recently for works critical of Obama. He made the 2012 the documentary "2016: Obama's America."

There is nothing scholarly about that man. If there was, his name would not be paired up in any way to the word "conservative."

So bad, I had no idea it was going to be about D'Souza before I opened the thread, even though I knew he'd be sentenced soon.

'Scholar'? I expected someone who works at a university. He has nothing to do with any form of 'school' at all. Wikipedia, with its neutral point of view, calls him "political commentator, filmmaker, and author". "Behind anti-Obama film"? No mention of the crime he committed. It sounds as if the problem was the anti-Obama film.

If they don't think he's well-known enough to name him, then "Conservative film-maker get probation for electoral fraud" would have been far more informative, or "Conservative activist...".

8 months in the halfway house, plus 5 years of community service once-a-week.

It would even have been reasonable if he got just the community service without the halfway house.
