Cape Town Shuts South Africa's Pro-Gay Mosque

Source: bbc

South Africa's first gay-friendly mosque, which also allows women to lead prayers, has been closed indefinitely, a local official has told the BBC.

A City of Cape Town councillor says the newly established Open Mosque had violated municipal by-laws by not having any parking spaces.

"The City Council is trying to close the mosque using ridiculous bylaws and I will not be threatened by them or anyone else," Mr Hargey told the BBC.

"We have freedom of religion and expression in this country. No-one has the right to tell anyone what to believe in. This is a gender equal mosque, autonomous and independent and will remain so," he said.

City councillor Ganief Hendricks denied that the closure was part of a witch-hunt.

"There are issues of health and safety to consider before [a mosque] is set up," Mr Hendricks said.

we often call on muslims to speak out against extremism and here we have someone who is pushing for more liberal and inclusive interpretation and look what happens.

and this is not a muslim nation either. it's large majority christian. muslims make up less than 2 percent .

But do they have free parking?

Parking is a little odd in South Africa. Apart from parking garages, there are freelance parking attendants, who seem to be organized by turf, who hang out in commercial parking areas designated to businesses and keep an eye on the cars there. It is customary to give them a few rand when you get back to your car, for the service of having watched your car

friendly doesn't mean they will be sensitive to things like gay friendly mosque or other religious organizations.

kind of like how some places allow people of certain faiths to do as they want but if you claim to be muslim or some others they expect certain things.

If it wasn't the parking, it would be something else.
