Movement to shelter immigrants spreads to 24 churches
Mariana Dale, The Republic | azcentral.com 12:13 p.m. MST September 24, 2014

A growing number of faith communities around the country are inviting undocumented immigrants facing deportation into their churches in response to the federal government's failure to reform immigration policy.

"Our elected leaders have failed to act," said Alison Harrington, pastor at Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, which has long history of offering sanctuary to migrants.

"In light of this crisis, we are calling for a national response from communities of faith to declare sanctuaries for those facing final orders of deportation."

There are now 24 churches prepared to offer sanctuary to undocumented immigrants, said Church World Service Grassroots Coordinator Noel Anderson. Another 52 churches say they support the sanctuary movement, church leaders said Wednesday.

Better to try to help latin America with its own economic problems so that people there do not have to leave their homes and come to the US to find work. This would also be better for US workers in construction, health care, food service, etc., whose jobs, wages and working conditions are negatively impacted by the exploitation of cheaper immigrant labor.

While you are certainly right about the long-term solution to the problem, there are urgent immediate needs that need to be met in the meantime. One does not preclude the other. Both should be done.

be they the lowest tier of legal workers, or the illegals who may threaten to replace them. In fact, the refugee problem was created by American actions in Latin America in the first place, and particularly spurred by treaties such as NAFTA. The international corporations profit at every turn of the screw in this vicious machine.

To deny basic necessities to a few people will not end up making anyone else better off.

Recently in Somerset County Pennsylvania a Catholic Church was raided and its Priest arrested. When the news was released, they said it was for "Criminal Activities" and many people PRESUMED it had to do with the pediafilia cases OR Drug shipments. The police, FBI, etc did they best to push that image, while NOT actually saying so. The FBI and INS do NOT investigate pediafilia cases, but they do investigate immigration cases.

The key was the involvement of INS, i.e. Immigration.
