3 surrender in Philadelphia gay beating case

Source: AP-Excite

By SEAN CARLIN

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A week after online sleuths used social media to identify suspects in the beating of a gay couple, three suburban Philadelphia defendants surrendered to police Wednesday and were charged in what one defense lawyer called merely a "fist fight that got out of hand."

Police said 24-year-old Philip Williams of Warminster; 24-year-old Kathryn Knott of Southampton, the daughter of a suburban police chief; and 26-year-old Kevin Harrigan of Warrington turned themselves in Wednesday morning. They were charged with criminal conspiracy and two counts each of aggravated and simple assault, and reckless endangerment.

The victims told police a group hurled gay slurs and beat them when the two parties passed on a Philadelphia street Sept. 11. One man suffered serious facial injuries, including an orbital fracture, and had his jaw wired.

Williams' attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr., said the suspects were celebrating a friend's birthday at a city restaurant prior to the encounter. He said the case did not involve anyone's sexual orientation, but was instead a "mutual confrontation" in which his client "was not the aggressor."

I bet the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, and I also bet that she gets leniency given her father's likely connections.

Edit to add: A quick Google search actually pulled up an article about her tweeting "Thanks" to her dad for getting special treatment a couple of years ago. I'm shocked I tell ya.

One of the suspects charged in the vicious beating of two gay men on a street in Philadelphia is a police chief’s daughter whose Twitter feed is littered with antigay slurs, tweets about binge drinking and blackouts and about how awful it is when your parents write you a check instead of just giving you cash.

The Associated Press reported on Wednesday morning that two of the three suspects wanted in the case surrendered to police after they were identified by social media users who matched their Facebook photos with security footage taken on the night of the attack.

Prosecutors told the AP that 24-year-old Philip Williams and 24-year-old Katherine Knott face charges of criminal conspiracy, aggravated and simple assault, and reckless endangerment, as does their co-defendant, 26-year-old Kevin Harrigan, who is still at large.

NBC Philadelphia reported that Knott is the daughter of Chalfont Borough Police Chief Karl Knott.

On Wednesday morning, Storify’s Scott Wooledge posted links to Katherine Knott’s Twitter account, where she boasted of binge drinking and complained about non-English speaking people, in addition to posting multiple antigay slurs. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/09/pennsylvania-police-chiefs-daughter-among-suspects-charged-in-philly-gay-bashing/

In a post that includes the racist and homophobic Twitter history archived by Scott Wooledge, Philadelphia Magazine has dug up a couple of more tweets from Kathryn Knott, the alleged gay-bashing daughter of a suburban Pennsylvania police chief.

This proves that looks are thin and can hide a dark, dark soul. I wonder at those expressions, though. Sorrow they did something despicably and hatefully bad, do you think? Or pissed off because they were inconvenienced by the arrest when all they did was beat the crap outta couple, you know, homes. (I can't help but wonder if the girl's expression says "Daddy will make you guys sooooo sorry you did this to me and my drinking buddies.&quot

Whaddya think?

Taco John's called me a gaytard

16 year old Tyler Brandt’s supervisor created and required him to wear a name tag labeled “GAYTARD” while he worked at a Taco John’s restaurant in Yankton, South Dakota. Tyler was intentionally humiliated in front of customers and coworkers to the point that he felt he had no option but to quit his job.

No one should have to face slurs in their workplace – no boss should be allowed to label their employee with insults.

This is why the ACLU is representing Tyler with his charge of discrimination against Taco John’s - but it's time they also apologize to Tyler and publicly speak out against discrimination and bullying in the workplace.

All corporations, including Taco John's, have a responsibility to ensure that their franchises understand that discrimination is unacceptable and illegal.

Will you sign to stand with Tyler and demand an apology from Taco John’s? Let's call on them to take a public stance against discrimination and bullying in the workplace, so no one else will have the horrible, shaming experience that Tyler had.

-- and I'm inclined to believe the kid -- the supervisor needs a whole lot more than a firing. Given that violence -- alas -- is not appropriate, how about if the kid sues him -- not just the corporation -- and sues him so he never earns another pay check in his life that is not garnished to pay the settlement. (Although it would be nice, wouldn't it, if the state could require the guy to have "I'm an a__hole" tattooed on his low, furrowed, neanderthal goddam forehead.)

Either you believe in innocent until proven guilty or you don't. The only information we have is what the victims have stated.
You could be very wrong about what went down or you may be right. All we really know is that a confrontation occurred.

We can't impose jail or fines.

Juries are admonished re: innocent until proven guilty. Since what we speak here is essentially "gossip", it isn't really necessary to admonish us. Thanks for your interest, though.

If this event is as so far described, then fine, consequences for all. If not, then hopefully the process will bring it to light.

The comments on here amaze me from people who profess to be liberals.

The one lesson that can be gleaned from this so far seems to forgotten daily - KEEP YOUR BUSINESS OFF THE STREET. Tweets of slurs and pictures of binge drinking? Lovely.

And what's about this ass't coach guy who resigned from his job before being fired who police seem to be saying was actually trying to break up this thing.

I find this case frightening on so many levels.

I have been a member of this site for many years. I am proud a liberal and well informed. I do not post here much but I visit often. I do not support the bashing of anyone. ANYONE! I am also very disappointed with the leap to judgement expressed here.

We have released hundreds of people from our jails because DNA proved them innocent. George Zimmerman is free. Our judicial system is not perfect, far from it. So taking the tiny amount of information we have about this case and assuming guilt is just plain stupid. If they are guilty then punish them and make it stick. I will wait until the guilt has been proven.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a great book and frames my political views.
