UNL climate report: Nebraska temperatures could rise 4-5 or 8-9 degrees by 2100

Nebraska has seen overall warming of 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1895, and temperatures are projected to rise between 4 and 5 degrees by the end of the century under a lower greenhouse gas emissions scenario or by 8 to 9 degrees under a high emissions scenario, according to a summary of a forthcoming report from University of Nebraska-Lincoln climate scientists.
The report will provide the first assessment of the specific impacts of climate change on Nebraska, said Don Wilhite, a UNL climatologist and one of the report’s authors.
“There really hasn’t been anything specific to Nebraska to this point,” he said.
The full 88-page report will be released Thursday after a panel discussion led by Wilhite and the study’s other co-authors. The discussion, the university’s first Heuermann Lecture of the 2014-15 season, will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center in Lincoln. Watch parties for broadcasts of the lecture are scheduled Thursday in Omaha and Chadron.
The Omaha event will be at 3:30 p.m. at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Mammel Hall, Room 113. A discussion and reception, with complementary food and beverages, will follow.
The lecture will be re-broadcast at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by the Green Omaha Coalition, the Joslyn Institute for Sustainable Communities, the Sierra Club Nebraska Chapter, the U.S. Green Building Council Nebraska Flatwater Chapter and UNO. Parking is available at UNO lots 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 14.

The Chadron watch party will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Chadron State College Student Center, 1000 Main St., in the Scottsbluff Room.
That event is hosted by Chadron State and the Nebraska National Forest.
