Ohio asks US Supreme Court to delay voting order
By ANN SANNER, Associated Press | September 25, 2014 | Updated: September 25, 2014 7:05pm

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Attorneys for Ohio asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday to delay a federal judge's order that expands the swing state's early voting schedule this fall.

The request comes a day after a three-judge panel of a federal appeals court upheld the order that allows early ballots to be cast next week.

In a Sept. 4 decision, U.S. District Judge Peter Economus temporarily blocked an Ohio law trimming early voting and ordered Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted to set additional times that included evening hours. The ruling moved the start of early voting to Tuesday instead of Oct. 7.

Ohioans can vote absentee by mail or in person.

The state is appealing the panel's decision and has asked the full 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to grant a rehearing.

State Solicitor Eric Murphy told the Supreme Court in Thursday's court filing that the judge's order was wrong and inequitable in making the changes so late.

8. Nina Turner running neck in neck with Repub candidate for SoS

This year's midterm elections offer an unprecedented opportunity for Ohio voters to make history by launching the first Democratic African American woman into the state's Executive Branch. Ohio State Senator Nina Turner, the Democratic nominee for Ohio Secretary of State, is running neck and neck in the polls against Republican incumbent John Husted, despite the GOP dominated State Legislature's efforts to roll back history by imposing a host of voter restrictions intended to create barriers and disrupt the ease of voting access for wide segments of the population.. . .
As State Senator, Turner has focused on expanding educational opportunities, women's health issues, and a fairer tax code. As a candidate for secretary of state, her steadfast commitment is to create business opportunities and avenues for advancement for Ohioans at the ballot box and in life. . . .

In support of Turner, former President Bill Clinton says:"Elections matter, and that's why it matters to all of us who administers our elections. With Nina as Secretary of State, we can count on her to expand and protect the franchise and restore integrity and fairness to the electoral process in Ohio."
Here's how you can help. If you know someone who lives in Ohio, call them and tell them to vote for Nina Turner as Secretary of State on November 4th or before Election Day during early voting in-person or by mail. Together we can carve a clear path for victory for a candidate who will move Ohio forward to fulfill its potential for all citizens rather than rewind it to a past that served a privileged few.

9. The State of Ohio is one of the worst voter suppression states

They tried this in 2012 and were not very secretive about their motives. From Cleveland.com:

“I guess I really actually feel we shouldn’t contort the voting process to accommodate the urban — read African-American — voter-turnout machine,” said Doug Preisse, chairman of the county Republican Party and elections board member who voted against weekend hours, in an email to The Dispatch. “Let’s be fair and reasonable.”
He called claims of unfairness by Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern and others “bullshit. Quote me!”

I will hammer this until someone takes the initiative and files civil rights violations against those who would deny the vote. The republicans in Ohio are the smarmiest group of slime balls you will ever see.

Do they have internal polls that show they are losing? They are running to courts in hopes of preventing Democratic votes in any way they can.

They want us to buy into the assumption that the republicans didn't wait until the last minute so that any suit would be jammed up against a deadline and thus they could make this very case.
