State's Largest Teachers Union Endorses Malloy
Source: Hartford Courant
Saying that Republican Tom Foley would set "the state on a path to education disaster," the leadership of the state's largest teachers union offered a strong endorsement Monday of Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.
"Dan Malloy has increased education funds by half a billion dollars, including millions into underperforming schools," Sheila Cohen, president of the Connecticut Education Association, said in a statement issued Monday. "He's the first governor in state history annually to fully fund the teacher pension plan during his term in office. And Gov. Malloy would protect our collective bargaining rights completely.''
The union criticized many of Foley's proposals, especially his "money follows the child" plan, which they said would drain more than $35 million from local public schools.
Mark Waxenberg, executive director of the union, which represents 43,000 teachers, said Monday that plan would be "totally destabilizing" for public school districts.

(19,574 posts)30% of Democrats are still on the fence regarding their support for Malloy. If they come home and we peel off some independents, Malloy will win by 3-5%.

(67,782 posts)....that they're on the fence. I suspect most of them who vote will vote for Malloy, and many of the unaffiliated voters will go for Malloy - Foley is just too scary for people to support him.
I hope we win by 3-5%, that would be 3-5% more than four years ago.

(19,574 posts)I mean they are on the fence between voting for Malloy or abstaining. They are not on the fence looking towards Foley, even the right leaning Quinnipiac poll said they would abstain before voting for Foley.
Malloy won by .6% the last time, I would like to see him get above a point.

(2,490 posts)recommendation of the CEA-PAC and, from what I understand, against the recommendation of a majority of the members who attended the candidates´ forum a few weeks ago.
Most teachers I've spoken with wanted to withhold any endorsement in the gubernatorial race. They don't want Foley, but they do want Malloy to recognize their displeasure...he's been horrible to teachers his first term in office.
