Armed demonstrators stroll through downtown St. Louis

Source: Kansas City Star

10/26/2014 9:29 AM

About 40 demonstrators armed with pistols and rifles – and a 19-month-old toddler with a toy gun – took to the streets of downtown St. Louis on Saturday afternoon to assert their right to carry guns openly in public.

The crowd walked along sidewalks from Citygarden to the Gateway Arch, surprising tourists along the route. The heavily armed crowd shouted “Congrats!” to surprised wedding parties posing for pictures in Kiener Plaza.

They carried pistols in holsters and long guns slung from their shoulders.

About 10 St. Louis police officers watched the gathering at Citygarden but didn’t interfere or follow the group on their walk. National Park police snapped pictures as the group walked on to the Arch grounds.

At Citygarden, a slightly larger group of counterprotesters gathered, many coming from a nearby meeting of Amnesty International.

(though he didn't say pot-bellied, he did say overweight; still that's a much gentler term than some of what I see around here when people's physical characteristics are gratuitously demeaned)

Thanks again for speaking up about this all too common form of "progressive" bigotry.

"I see over-weight, middle-aged+ and white male." tells us a lot about YOU.

It's kind of disgusting.

Well, come to think of it, "middle-aged+" is a lot gentler than "old geezer", which I saw here (on another thread) yesterday. Edited to add: And well, actually, in fairness, "middle-aged+" is not derogatory if it's true, and not just some assumption based on assuming most/all non-young people are evil or jerks in one way or another.

Yes, "old geezer" was a characterization of a terrible elderly RepubliCON, but still, I prefer we stay away from derogatory terms that are mostly used to characterize elderly people, or other broad demographic groups.

Nobody here would post something characterizing awful RW'ers like Clarence Thomas or Herman Cain using disparaging racial word(s), so why is it OK to characterize awful elderly RW'ers with disparaging ageist terms?

My picture is of two of the marchers having a talk with other citizens.

I wasn't there, I didn't watch the marchers but I did see five stills from the march and that was one of them.

Photographers are editors, if they want to portray a group as all-white or all-black or all full of hate, they'll select the ones that fit the narrative.

I selected one that stood out as demonstrating some reasonable interactions among a diverse group of folks at the event, including two marchers, one of whom is not white.

I wished only to point out that these marchers with their guns were doing so within the city limits of St. Louis (the city). As I understand it, that is a completely separate county from 'St. Louis County' (which houses Ferguson, Crestwood - home to Officer Wilson, and other suburbs). I've got my money on 'entirely white group' or 'almost all white with a token black person', given that police didn't feel the need to confront them or keep them in 'protest zones'.

If Ferguson protestors had tried that, I'm sure we'd be looking at a lot of bodybags by now.

an obsession. Seems like the obsession is on the other side. I do have a few firearms locked in my safe and occasionally use them for target shooting. I hope you get just as worked up over drunk and distracted driving, swimming pools and countless other items that if used in an unsafe manor will cause death or injury. Why does anyone need a swimming pool, what purpose does it serve? A firearm can be used for hunting for food and protection from dangerous animals and people.

Open Carry Gun Walk Attracts Attention Downtown

October 26, 2014 10:36 AM

ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- About three dozen gun owners turned out Saturday afternoon, with their firearms, for what they called an “educational walk” in downtown St. Louis.

They strolled from the CityGarden to the Gateway Arch

Organizer Jeffry Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio had a rifle slung on his shoulder and a holstered handgun on his hip, “At this moment, the state of Missouri has, among the 50 states, the strongest constitutional amendment (the recently enacted Amendment 5) regarding the right to keep and bear arms.”

Missouri changed its firearms laws to allow citizens with concealed carry permits to also openly carry rifles and handguns.

Sierra Lewis had a handgun at her side, and her young daughter brought a toy Nerf gun to Saturday’s walk. Lewis wanted to show support for the open carry provision, “I think it’s going to help around the streets. Make sure they are safe. I think people are going to be apt to do so much more if they know people are here protecting others.”

ST. LOUIS - Downtown St. Louis once again served as the backdrop to a group of people meeting for a cause.

Saturday, dozens walked toward the Gateway Arch with their firearms in tow.

Ohio man, Jeffry Smith, organized the Open Carry/Firearms Educational Walk. He planned the event to recognize recent changes to Missouri's constitution and gun laws.

"It is to exercise those rights, it is to put them to the test, and it is to educate the public that sees this going on and asks questions of us," Smith said.

Gun Rights Supporters Head to Gateway Arch, Citygarden to Test Missouri's New Gun Laws
By Danny Wicentowski Mon., Oct. 20 2014 at 10:25 AM

Who wants to get strapped for a stroll?
The current landscape of Missouri gun law is confusing.

Last month, state legislators overrode Governor Jay Nixon's veto on a bill that instantly erased all regional bans on open carrying firearms. Then, add the passing of Amendment 5, which enshrined all Missouri gun laws as "unalienable," and it would appear that gun rights in the Show Me state have never been stronger.

But nobody in Missouri -- including law enforcement and St. Louis city officials -- seems to understand the true scope of these new gun laws, says Jeffry Smith, a firearms activist and instructor from Ohio. Smith is leading an "Open Carry/Firearms Educational Walk" this weekend in downtown St. Louis, saying he wants Missourians to know their constitution provides a fundamental right to open carry firearms, even without a concealed carry permit. He and potentially dozens of local and out-of-state activists want to prove their point by taking a "friendly" jaunt with their guns through Citygarden and the Gateway Arch on October 25.

Rifle-Toting Huey P. Newton Gun Club Delivers Report on Police Shootings to Feds

Categories: Guns, News

In hopes of raising awareness of police brutality, two groups walked single-file together through downtown Dallas Monday afternoon with rifles slung over their shoulders. The Huey P. Newton Gun Club, which marched down Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in August, and the Indigenous People's Liberation Party stopped in front of the Earle Cabell Federal Building and Courthouse. As about 10 members stood in a line on the sidewalk across the building's entrance, three members went inside and attempted to hand a report directly to U.S. Attorney Sarah Saldana.

They got as far as her division manager with the report, compiled from data obtained through open-records requests, which shows that the majority of victims of Dallas police shootings are from the minority community. It's the same report Dallas Communities Organizing for Change released to the media last week. To the marchers, the numbers in the report are evidence of a systemic problem of police abuse toward minorities.

Charles Goodson, one of the three who handed over the report and a Gun Club leader, believes the numbers in the report have been largely ignored by the city and police Chief David Brown.

"I think it's a great contradiction that they would allow us to get these records and then at the same time when we present them with the facts and the records that they've given to us they don't really pay close attention to that at all," Goodson said. "One of the main things we want to do here today is put that information forward to the community and get it legitimized."

I expect either:

or some rather tortured logical gymnastics...

They are already on it - 4 of these fancy PR moms met yesterday at a local Black-Eyed Pea in TX and a dozen or so members of Texas Open Carry were there with assault rifles to intimidate the moms and frighten locals.

One camera angle might have been a little misleading, but these gun yahoos did show up to intimidate the ladies. Further, DU Gungeoneers supported them then, and you are carrying on the tradition.

Now, let's get back to the racists in St. Louis, almost a year later trying to send a message to poor people in Ferguson.

I, and many others, have long maintained that the arming up of America is largely racially based. The St. Louis protests -- and their supporters -- make it pretty clear.

Black Texas Gun Club Stages Open Carry Protest against Killer Cops

Raw Story

A Texas gun club named after one of the founders of the Black Panthers Party marched in Dallas on Wednesday to protest against police brutality, KTXA-TV reported.

Around two dozen members of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club carried rifles and red, black and green flags as they marched through the city’s south side, sometimes chanting in support of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old man killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, on Aug. 9.

“If they don’t get these killer cops and corrupt cops under control,” a member identifying himself as Commander Drew X was quoted as saying. “What happened in Ferguson is going to be nationwide.”

Rifle-Toting Huey P. Newton Gun Club Delivers Report on Police Shootings to Feds
By Sky Chadde Tue., Oct. 7 2014 at 7:38 AM

The Huey P. Newton Gun Club and the Indigenous People's Liberation Party stand across the street from the Earle Cabell Federal Building and Courthouse.

Members of the Gun Club prepare for their downtown march.

"If I don't get my way I will shoot you, you got it?" That is the jist of what is going on here and you can claim anything you want. The gun-humping crowd is out demonstrating for what? Moar Gunz!!! What is it they are protesting really? They and their nitwit political allies have turned this country into an idiot shooting range with no solution in sight and they are out there parading for what? I'll tell you what they are doing, they are threatening people who want sensible gun laws to keep assholes like them from owning guns. Yeah I said it, assholes like that should have their guns taken away, simply because they are are unstable, mentally.

It never used to be this way. I have hunted and owned guns my whole life, and not until the Repugnant Party and their crazy allies at the Nitwits, Racist, and Assholes have turned all Taliban, has there been asswipes parading around carry assault rifles. Hunters and shooters used to have more sense and more dignity.

Screw those punk-assed crybabies. Hopefully they won't start doing in public with those guns what they do with them at home, shoving them in and out of their asses. Thank goodness we have been spared that atrocity for the time being.

without having to carry a gun and I've lived in the most "dangerous." cities in America due to being homeless for 9 years. If you have to carry a gun to work you might want to look into new lines of employment. If you have to carry a gun in your neighborhood then your neighborhood problems are deeper than any gun can solve. In this area of Idaho people open carry everyday, a common sight. Many of them are white Republicans, others are Native Americans as we border a huge reservation.

A word to the good people combating racism. It doesn't help to fight racism by using racist remarks. Why should I listen to that? They are being just as racist as the racists they are confronting.
