(55 posts)Huge advantage to the repubs now, but watch for them to squander their win over the next 2 years. I don't think they will be able to control themselves. I'm not worried.

(14,162 posts)Not by a long shot. What they have gained will be obstructionism in reverse. Do unto others.... etc.

Tragic.

(904 posts)The Senate was not "won". It was BOUGHT. And PAID FOR.
And if you think $4 Billion is a steep price tag for the entire legislative branch, just wait for the 2016 General. How does $8 Billion sound? Or MORE?
Think the Kochs won't spend that kind of money? Or Adelson? Think again...
Now, the Dems will need to take a page from the Repubs' obstructionist playbook and filibuster every bullshit bill they try to inflict on the people. That, and if McTurtle tries to chip away at Obamacare through budget reconciliation, Obama will need to keep his handy dandy veto pen at the ready.
These are big IFs right now, especially with a party that has such a fetish for "bipartisanship".
I'm bummed right now, too. But I'm not surprised.
And not seeing too much hope for a return to the progressive politics that the Democratic party USED to stand for.

(17,663 posts)advising that tonight as he chatted with Manchin...oh, yeah, the GOP
certainly will meet the Dems halfway, now that they've lost the Senate..
No, the Dems will bend over AS USUAL..
NO FIGHT, NOT PRIDE IN ANYTHING THEY'VE DONE, COWARDLY...

(15,268 posts)First, this just means another two years of no real government (added to the previous 20-plus years.) Nothing gets through the senate anyway without 60 votes, except for the largely ceremonial non-judicial appointments.
Second, the republicans won't eliminate the filibuster for everything as some claim they will. So nothing worthwhile will get through the new senate, just like the old one.
Third, an Obama veto is still solid. There isn't enough to override. This also is one reason for #2 above.
Fourth, the one thing that will change is the tone of politics. It will become worse than it already is. Ignore it. It is all theater anyway. Turn off the silly opinion shows that are carefully crafted not to inform but to enrage. It's all part of the "outrage industry."
Fifth, everyone, including the media, has been treating politics like a sporting match -- "the red team versus the blue team." Jon Stewart is right. The real sides here are not red/blue or republican/democrat. It is honest versus corrupt. Framing this like a soccer game isn't productive at all. In fact, it is childish.
That's enough.

(17,663 posts)to force Obama to sign things to preserve SOME things...
He is a wimp and I don't trust him to veto anything.
He will worry about looking like the "angry Black man" some more
and you know that if he vetoes, the GOP will yell "obstruction" ...apparently,
people did not see THEM obstructing, but they sure will know that
Obama is "obstructing."\
He better start using the word "preserving" if does veto anything. He's got to
argue his case AGAIN...

(28,316 posts)obamacare now as its working and if they do that it would hurt alot of people who they know damn well will hold a grudge.
Now what they might try is to actually improve it now and take the credit away from Obama and the democrats, after all they want the whitehouse and the only way they will get that is if they dont fuck this up like they did when Bush was in office.

(2,482 posts)Jon Stewart who had a video chat with Reince Priebus (I have to do anagrams with his name!) opined that the Dems strategy was to "curl up in a fetal position". I have to agree. They ran from Obama, didn't speak out for the ACA, and certainly did not light any fires under the voters. I am so frustrated that they once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Some of these races were close, but the will to win just wasn't there.

(429 posts)As long as it stands, our elected "representatives" (president, House, Senate, governors, etc.) aren't going to represent us beyond tossing a few crumbs and a lot of yada yada lip service. Billionaires will continue to win, and the rest of us will continue to lose.

(117 posts)Republicans will be defending twice as many seats in 2016 so this could very well flip back in a couple of years.
