WASHINGTON -- House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is throwing a lifesaver to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R) as the Louisiana congressman faces a deluge of criticism and questions over a 2002 speech he gave to a white supremacist group.
"More than a decade ago, Representative Scalise made an error in judgment, and he was right to acknowledge it was wrong and inappropriate. Like many of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I know Steve to be a man of high integrity and good character. He has my full confidence as our Whip, and he will continue to do great and important work for all Americans," Boehner said in a Tuesday statement.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is also standing by Scalise.
"Congressman Scalise acknowledged he made a mistake and has condemned the views that organization espouses," McCarthy said in a statement released moments after Boehner's. "I've known him as a friend for many years and I know that he does not share the beliefs of that organization."

That an Orange-American like Boehner can forgive Scalise's White Supremacist association(s) is stunning!

(24,683 posts)Sounds like the guy with the orange face and hands and also sounds like drunk supports his members that go and participates with a known racists and has a platform of racism.
So Boehner and McCarthy are on the same page ? How quaint.
This hypocrite and his leaders are suppose to be transparent--don't think so.
And now that he has admitted his act he now asks for forgiveness, not on this watch, zippy.
He knew and he acted in is own right wing tea party self hypocrite interest, and he is the number three hypocrite in the caucus, and then we hear from the number two that he has known this hypocrite for years, really, I just wonder what they said during the cocktail hours with there leader.
Wonder what these hypocrites will do to address the issue of humans getting murdered by police officers if and when the legislation is brought forward by the Congressional Black Caucus, this show of support for this person says a lot about this right wing republican team
If I was in the house I would go before the body and demand an apology and then that still would not be good enough ------resign

(233 posts)Could it be that other GOPers will be threatened with exposure if the GOP does not back Scalise?
He's not the only one to embrace white supremacy, the KKK and other nefarious groups.
Yet, I heard one defense of white supremacy as being the same as the NAACP! These racists live and breathe among us, and they vote! They really think they are better than the rest of us. I don't know whether to shake the living daylights out of them or to order them to psychiatric help.
