Saudi Cleric Says Building Snowmen is “Un-Islamic”

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by azurnoir (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Al-Akhbar

A prominent Saudi cleric whipped up controversy by issuing a religious ruling forbidding the building of snowmen, describing them as un-Islamic.

Asked on a religious website if it was permissible for fathers to build snowmen for their children after a snowstorm in the country's north, Sheikh Mohammed Saleh al-Munajjid replied: "It is not permitted to make a statue out of snow, even by way of play and fun."

Snow has covered upland areas of Tabuk province near Saudi Arabia's border with Jordan for the third consecutive year as cold weather swept across the Middle East.

Quoting Muslim scholars, Munajjid argued that to build a snowman was to create an image of a human being, an action considered sinful under the kingdom's medieval interpretation of Sharia.

The article continues with criticism about the cleric's ruling, but:

Munajjid had some supporters, however. "It (building snowmen) is imitating the infidels, it promotes lustiness and eroticism," one wrote. "May God preserve the scholars, for they enjoy sharp vision and recognize matters that even Satan does not think about." ...

Badawi, a brave human-rights activist, was sentenced to 15 years by a Saudi court - and 50 lashes once a week for 20 weeks - because he critiqued the way Saudi clerics interpret Islam.

The United States government did not enforce the KKK's evil, Fred. 50 lashes once a week for 20 weeks. That's a hit piece on decency and humanity.

You say 'This guy has no power with some rantings on a website, same as the preachers ranting on websites in America' but the fact is that people there get the lash for being critical of clerics. That's the truth. What you said is not the truth.

Saudi Arabia has blocked a website of a Muslim scholar, popular for dedicating a major section for issuing fatwas (religious edicts) to visitors seeking religious consultation, Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya reported.

The Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) blocked access to Islam-qa.com (Islam: Question and Answer) of Saudi-based Syrian Sheikh Muhammad al-Munajjid apparently because of violating a royal order saying only approved scholars can issue fatwas, the network reported Friday on its website.
