Bill de Blasio, stiff-spined liberal that takes no crap (Daily Kos)
The deaths of the two New York City police officers are being used as a hatchet in an attempt to neuter New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Condolences must be given to the families of the police officers who were murdered in New York City last week. No one wants to harm police officers. No one wants to be harmed by police officers. The incident is unrelated to those who are rightfully protesting police brutality.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio must continue to stay strong to his principles and not succumb to the bullying of the police unions or the media. The mayor must not yield to the thuggish tactics of police unions, specifically to the likes of the Patrolmans Benevolent Association head Patrick Lynch.
<snip>
Having a Bill de Blasio at this time is more important than ever. He is a white man living the reality of having a black son with incidences every person of color has experienced at some time when confronting a police officer. The mayor, better than anyone else, must be that bridge that becomes the empathy-generating catalyst. Many who cannot easily see the indignities many are subjected to by the police may do so more easily through the expressed lived experiences of this mayor and father.
It was eye opening and impressive to watch Bill de Blasios news conference. He refused to cower or backtrack from any of his statements. More importantly he used the opportunity to admonish the press when they attempted to tie the protests to the murders of the policemen.

(11,589 posts)NYC has a very good man as a Mayor and he deserves better than all of the garbage he and his family are dealing with.

(39,313 posts)end up being a very beloved Mayor or who knows what else in his future. Really liking the guy and watching him handle the attempt to disgrace him, yeesh.

(3,547 posts)As a non-U.S. citizen observing these events, I realise I have no direct stake in the outcome here. But watching this embattled Mayor endure this storm for weeks has been....a bit gut-wrenching, I must say.
I like Bill de Blasio. I should also like to visit NYC someday - hopefully while he is still the Mayor.

(53,661 posts)A few examples here not brought up but need more attention - beware, grisly details, too:

The killing in NYC was very much like the one in Lakewood, WA., a felon afraid of being caught right after having committed a crime:

Just a small sample of American ambush or otherwise cop killings that's been happening for years:

Back then, toting around an AK-47 was a big deal. The intentions were obvious. Now we have 2A solution and other gun rights absolutionists buying them like cellphones and insisting on their right to enter all public spaces. Needless to say, not only cops are paranoid around this kind of behavior.
Those articles in the Wikipedia appear to show both sides without drama. But running around with what was formerly military style hardward in civil society is creating a bad feeling for many. In a nation of over 300 million, a percentage of these strangers aren't reliable.
I'm not being this up to support any of the RW commentary, far from it. You say you are from another nation, but like it or not, American culture spans the globe.
This is bad and not really about this incident - which is not the first one as Lynch claims. And that Lynch is going nuts over this and Faux is picking up on it, stinks to high heaven.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday drew heckles and boos as well as cheers when he addressed graduating police cadets on Monday, two days after thousands of uniformed officers turned their backs on him at a slain policemans funeral.
<snip>
De Blasio, addressing nearly 900 graduating cadets, said, You will confront all manner of problems. Problems that you didnt create.
A heckler cried out: You created them! Some in the audience applauded the outburst.
De Blasio, briefly flustered, continued with his speech.
A dozen or so people turned their backs on the mayor as he spoke, repeating a gesture by thousands of officers at Saturdays funeral for policeman Rafael Ramos.
