Obama Says U.S. Won’t Rule Out Withholding UN Support for Israel
Mar 24, 2015 3:31 PM EDT
(Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama refused to rule out the possibility of allowing a Palestinian push for statehood through the United Nations as part of a U.S. reassessment of its approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Were going to do that evaluation, Obama said at a news conference in response to a question on whether he would consider supporting Palestinian statehood at the UN. Were going to partly wait for an actual Israeli government to form.
Such a move would represent a major shift in U.S. policy and trigger new tensions with Israel and between the Obama administration and Congress.
While other administration officials have said the U.S. would reevaluate its stance after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he wont support the creation of a Palestinian state anytime soon, Tuesdays White House news conference marked the strongest indication from the president of his intentions.
Obamas comments also indicated that the administration plans to keep up pressure on Netanyahu, who has backed away from his original statements, made last week just before Israeli voters went to the polls.

(23,946 posts)Will Israel abide the world rule of law and opinion, or extend Gaza Prison to all of not already yet Annexed or Occupied Palestine?
Or would Obama inching toward also recognizing, on behalf of America, that Palestine is an official Soverign nation also make Obama appear or be made to appear "lawless" and "caving to the lawless U.N., in the eyes and minds of Iowa and New Hampshire 2016 Republican Presidential primary?
That is always the math to be applied by the GOP and Fox and CNN - the MSM is just standing back in admiration at the latest brazen attempt at totally determining the easily led American "public opinion", as Netanyahu so famously phrased it years ago, so easily swayed into any desired opinion - again.
So soon after the last brazen attempt?!

(15,438 posts)as long as he's PM?? Jeezus! Netanyahu said it publicly for all to hear (and translate). It made the U.S. look like fools for believing that Israel under Netunyahu would continue to work in order to see a peaceful two-state resolution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Now Netanyahu basically said that Israel's been leading the U.S. around by the nose.
That statement is a slap in the face of the U.S. taxpayer and the U.S. president, and Netanyahu can't be allowed to sweep that damaging statement under the rug and hope we'll forget.

This must have been a big surprise - if not complete shock - to Netanyahu.

(19 posts)that little bastard annoys me like Joe Pecci in Good Fellas.....loud annoying obnoxious and giving his "friends" all kinds of trouble by his mouth and his aggressive provocative antics. Great movie and so cathartic and justifiable when the Joe Pecci character finally got his comeuppance.

(16,423 posts)Give Netanyahu 3 months to lay out his suggestions for the foundation of a future palestinian nation alongside Israel. If he's really for a Two-State-solution, he won't have problems coming up with a plan.
Note:
Going first in negotiations is good because you can set a baseline that the others will subconsciously adhere to.
Going first in negotiations is bad because now the others know what's important to you.

(54,526 posts)Now, with his "no two-state" solution statement and the "Arabs are voting statement", and the country of Israel re-electing him on the heels of those statements, they have to live with openly choosing apartheid and what comes from blatant, in-your-face racism.
Netanyahu outsmarted himself by underestimating Obama. I think he'll regret it and I hope our president puts his feet to the fire by allowing the Palestinian statehood resolution through the UN.

(469 posts)... from Security Council censure at the UN via our Permanent-Member veto power. It might be a better idea to simply allow one of those censure votes to pass. That will send a pretty strong message to Bibi.
The major question Netanyahu has to answer right now is "WHEN were you lying, and WHO were you lying to?" The question of whether or not the man is a liar has been settled, as he cannot possibly negotiate a 2-state solution in good faith if he is totally opposed to the concept of a 2-state solution. So, Benjy, baby, were you lying to the Israeli right when you said there would NEVER be a 2-state solution as long as you are PM, or have you been lying to the rest of the world for years, by allowing negotiations toward a solution that you have no intention of accepting?

(924 posts)though I really think we need to stop financially supporting Israel. They're doing fine financially and we could better use the money in the U.S. I understand a lot of American citizen would not agree, but there seems to be no other way to make the Israeli government know that what they are doing is WRONG.

(19 posts)what is it that Israel does for the US? Nothing. They have their hand deep in the pocket of the American Tax Payer for their very existence and for what benefit? Nothing. There is nothing that "independent state of Israel" does for anyone outside its borders.....and they are a problem and provoke problems.
That bastard comes and gives a speech and claims to be among the "American Family".....while shooting off his mouth? And, demanding money and support like a drunk derelict belligerent spend-thrift entitled prodigal son of Prescott Bush. There isn't another American protectorate that behaves so unreasonably and if Americans tolerate that then you can expect Philippine Islands to attack Japan and Costa Rica to attack Mexico.
Why not the benevolence.....and ignorance.....of the GOP is bottomless.

(89 posts)or something close to that. Anyone who thinks that is a sustainable thing is sorely mistaken. Maybe it is time Israel lost a few votes 173 to 1. Some attitude adjustment is required somewhere, somehow. Maybe this would be the smelling salts needed at the moment.

(5 posts)I've got nothing against Jewish people, but the nation of Israel is based on racism. They have a history of spying on us while taking our money, and this last stunt by Netanyahu and the republican party was the last straw. Not one more dime for the state of Israel!

(19 posts)And....exactly how is it that America, a nation that claims "Religions Freedom and Tolerance" as a foundational principle is the primary sponsor and protector of a Nation State founded on one religion and intolerant and hostile to other religious faiths.
The GOP is fighting and supporting a religious proxy war against Islam and just like the "Cold War" against communism that had its front in Germany and Korea and Cuba. In this religious war Israel is the ground zero.
America should cut all direct ties to Israel that exist beyond the United Nations. Israel is plotting with the GOP to start the next World War just as George Bush coordinated the illegal attack on Iraq without the support of the UN.
