India drags US to WTO over new visa cap, higher fees http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-51263331,width-400,resizemode-4/51263331.jpg "The issue is of special interest to India as several Indian software professionals go to the US every year on temporary work visas. The rules impact Indian information technology firms as they are being forced to hire local workers, which pushes up their overall cost of operations.
Although the government has been toying with the idea of seeking WTO's intervention on visa issues, it had been reluctant earlier as entry of foreigners is also a sovereign decision. The move comes ahead of the US presidential elections, where displacement of American workers and offshoring of jobs is an emotive issue." See also: http://www.wikileaks.org/tisa

2. I am talking about L-1 visas- Also- Thats the pay back for 20 years of globalization.
Its their turn, so to speak. that is how they see it.
Jobs have been written into international services agreements, as an entitlement if they can be the winning low bidders. Their competitive advantage is low costs. That is their argument. Under neoliberalism, thats good, profits can be higher if wages are lower. Americans need to understand the GATS and TiSA. Soon. Like, it seems, within the next few days. Looking at the schedule on the wikileaks site. It looks like its almost over. carve outs have to go in before the agreement is finalized. We need to protect essential public services or they will be blocked and turned into entitlements for corporations. And that means all those jobs may be globalized. Depending on who can win them by tendering the lowest bids. |
