Bill requiring La. students to recite the Declaration of Independence Moves Forward

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Remember reciting the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in school? Well, for some Louisiana kids, they might be adding something else to start their day; the Declaration of Independence.

The Louisiana House voted in favor of students, grades 4-6 to recite a portion of the Declaration of Independence every morning.

But unlike the Pledge of Allegiance, where students must be given the opportunity to recite, but it is not mandatory, the reciting of the Declaration of Independence will be mandated.

The bill will now head to the Louisiana Senate.

is many times longer than the Pledge?

Also, isn't there a part in there about King George encouraging "servile rebellion?" It'll be interesting to hear how these folks will explain that one.

"Yeah, those nasty British were encouraging our slaves to fight for their freedom! I mean, talk about tyranny!"

A full reading might open up their students' minds to very many questions.

Still. "All men are created equal? That kinda leaves out women and children, doesn't it?

It has nothing to do with the Constitution. it is not the law. We should study what is real, not what might or could theoretically be related to what is real.

but then, Civics was the main topic of our education at the time.

I have no problem with school kids learning the Declaration or reciting it. Hopefully they'll also learn that the Declaration is not a legal document. I'm fairly appalled at how uninformed our population is on a lot of issues.
