More Americans Are Dying in Poverty

The official measure of who’s poor doesn’t include the healthcare costs faced by the elderly.

By Amrith Ramkumar

When Donald Trump says almost four in ten black American youths live in poverty, he’s technically correct.

According to the official poverty measure, 36 percent of African-Americans under the age of 18 fell below the poverty line in 2014.

The problem with that statistic is that the official poverty line is a flawed measurement. It doesn’t take into account benefits like food stamps and tax credits, so unlike the more recent supplemental poverty measure, it can’t account for the fact that earned income and child tax give-backs lower the poverty rate by 3.1 percentage points, and food stamps (formally known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits) cut it by 1.5 percentage points.
“What we’re doing to fight poverty actually does help reduce poverty,” said Gregory Acs, director of the Income and Benefits Policy Center at the Urban Institute, which recently published an analysis of American poverty. “We’re just not measuring it right.”

Though no empirical measure can truly illustrate the day-to-day reality of being poor, the reduced number of poor children under the supplemental poverty measure is of course good news. There is though a darker side to this more accurate accounting: When including out-of-pocket healthcare costs, more elderly Americans are classified as living in poverty.

According to 2014 census data, 10 percent of those 65 and older fell below the official poverty measure. That number rose to 14.4 percent using the supplemental measure. A big reason for this is that older people are more likely to use costly services like staying overnight in a hospital or in a skilled nurse facility.

that flies below the radar. What really sucks is the cost of Medications and the price gauging that is going on.

is the root of the biggest problems in our society.
The blame lies firmly on Republican economic policies.

Since Nixon devalued the dollar, inflation has risen astronomically.
I remember as a kid seeing the Germans food lines, bread costing 3 weeks wage, etc.
It has happened here, is happening here.
The Rs keep chipping away at the safety net while they use the inequality as a tool
against us to keep different factions of the poor fighting each other.

Meanwhile, at the grocery store, meat, any meat has skyrocketed in price.
It now is cheaper to buy bread than to make it.
The same goes for many other foods that we used to save by making at home.(beer)

So, envision a future that has no purpose, no way to get out of poverty.
Can't afford to eat well, the authorities use you as income.
You must respect those above you or go to jail, maybe get shot.

And people think removing guns is the be-all answer...

Give people hope for a future and much violence will cease.

I completely agree with your decision. Poverty on an individual can lead to the lifelong struggles, especially to the rural area children where they even don't get a chance to receive the education. Many of the organizations like mission humananitiare are taking much effort, where volunteers work for the child welfare and educate them by teaching them the valuable things. One can see this site to know more about the different support programs arranged by mission humanitiare.
