10 years ago Trump would have faced a treason trial after being co-opted by Putin

With host Joy Reid warning that Trump might turn Voice of America into a Putin-like media outlet, guest Malcolm Nance said the problem goes far beyond that.
Im not sure he [Trump] has heard of Voice of America, thats not a joke, Nance said. Lets not laugh at it, its actually scary. But for the most part, if he finds out that he can have his own version of Russia Today, his own version of Sputnik, two propaganda arms that took over from the Soviet Unions Pravda, it could be exceptionally damaging.
But I want to come to a point that was made a little bit earlier, he added. When did all of this happen to Donald Trump, right? He met Gorbachev. He was a big supporter of glasnost. At some point, he was co-opted by Vladimir Putin. and that means he bought into and embraced the dictatorial ideology that was done by a spy master of the KGB. Ten years ago, 20 years ago, there would be treason trials. I would like to bring one point up. because long ago there was a guy named Yuri Bezmenov, a KGB officer, and he wrote,This is who the KGB targeted and recruited, egocentric people who lack moral principles and who are too greedy or who suffer from exaggerated self-importance. These are the people the KGB wants and finds easiest to recruit.'

(20,568 posts)I could understand if trump voters were all 10 years old but these were adults who have sold out this country. I cannot figure out what they were thinking and it is obvious Democrats cannot find common ground with these aliens. This is what passes for patriotism??

(35,274 posts)But when he saw what happened under Yeltsin he became quasi-Russian in outlook: What's the use of democracy if the country's unstable, corrupt, violent?
(Throw in obsession over grievances and the view that outsiders are out to get the US and are denying it its proper place in the world and you've nicely mirrored Xi and Putin's views. Stability over freedom, don't get taken advantage of by all those damned foreigners. Yes, traits shared by fascism, but fascism also sent kids to public school and liked public transportation so you can't read too much into a few traits. What's needed is authoritarianism, which suits Xi and Putin just fine, but it's unclear wrt Trump.)

And this "expert" thinks Trump would've been charged with "treason"? He's delusional.

(50,528 posts)According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_convicted_of_treason, only 14 people in the history of the United States have been convicted of that crime.
Come on, guys: if they didn't charge any of the Cold War spies with treason when they CLEARLY provided aid and comfort to the enemy, they wouldn't have charged Trump with it either. Also, 20 years ago Trump wouldn't have aligned himself with Russia in the first place: Trump's only interest in that nation was borrowing their money, and Soviet rubles would have been worthless to him.
