Don't Impeach: The Liberal Case for Not Removing Trump

VP is smarter, smoother, and could do far more damage

By Cliston Brown • 05/16/17 6:30am

Democrats are excited. They are beginning to sense that they have Donald Trump right where they want him.

And they do. Trump is doing more damage to himself and his party every day. Every new stupid statement, every new blunder, and every new scandal make it more and more likely that Democrats will win big in 2018 and 2020. But as they often do, Democrats are failing to see when they’ve got a good thing going and are looking for a way to screw it up. For a party with a gift from the political gods, they sure seem to be in a gigantic hurry to give it back.

Even if it were possible—and I still maintain, with 24 House Republicans and 19 Republican Senators needed, that it is highly unlikely—the absolute stupidest, most self-defeating thing Democrats can push for right now is the impeachment and removal of President Trump.

No. Keep him in office. Politically, Trump is the goose that’s laying a treasure trove of golden eggs. Let him spend four years making such a toxic wreck of the Republican Party that disgusted voters won’t want to get anywhere near the GOP for a decade. Let him finish the job that George W. Bush started and turn the party into a smoldering ruin at last.

if it wasn't so dangerous.

I think the best approach is for the Democrats to continue to exercise their oversight role to the best of their ability as the minority party and invite the Republicans to do their Constitutionally mandated duty with them.

Let a Republican utter the word "Impeachment".

Look at how much damage Trump has done in 3 months and just imagine what can transpire in 4 years.

Unlike the Republicans, I think we are capable of a higher concern over what is good for the nation, not just what will benefit our party.

will not fly. They should continue to exercise their oversight role and let the Republicans come up with that great idea. Otherwise it will not happen.

senators and representatives until every one of them in Congress is voted out. Our objective is to purge the House by 2020 and the Senate by 2022. Turn #45 into the gift that keeps giving.

Trump is dangerous, vindictive and unpredictable... Not exactly the type of person you can reliably fence in or carry for a few rounds...

Besides, you never know when dumb luck, an act of god, or another 9-11 will shoot Trump's popularity to 90%... I mean FFS even the 'liberal' media was orgasmic after he delivered a halfway competent SOTU address.

No... Get his fucking ass out ASAP

And the author needs to stop trolling for mouseclicks

political advantage as the editorial suggests, but to bring charges against someone where you have evidence of committing a crime. If that happens, to ignore it is putting the country in danger, and that is unacceptable.

Second, the Democrats currently are not in control of Congress, the republicans are, so the Democrats won't be able to bring articles of impeachment to floor.

Finally, the reckless behavior of trump is jeopardizing and putting the country and world at risk, and if impeachable crimes are found, it is the duty of congress to do their job.

.......is exactly what any Republican INCLUDING PENCE would be doing. The difference is that Trump is toxic. Trump taints the Republican brand. Pence will put a "dignified" smile and a reasonable face on the exact same policies and positions as Trump has. And then we'll be right back to "The adults are in charge again. Why won't Democrats work with Republicans?!?!?"

And that's just in terms of the optics and media coverage. Voters are even dumber and will fall for it hook line and sinker and completely have memory loss come 2018.

Your would think we learn from past mistakes but the majority of Americans don't know history, don't give a shit, or are incredibly stupid. Actually a combination of that list is a more realistic assessment of the average mentality of the voting/not voting public. I taught school in CA for over 15 years and Civics has never been in the curriculum in public schools for 6th grade! Sad but true.
