I'm pretty sure he meant machine gun referring to the solders pointing it in the air.
And then there is the first color photograph.

(100 posts)Almost all of these photographs could be illustrations of Marcel Proust's work. Even more so seeing that he could see the exact same sights and people with his own eyes, writing, as he was, at the same time.
Is this air of faint melancholy and wistfulness because of this or is it just that the modern viewer has a knowledge of the mess that camr afterwards?
Mon Dieu, la nostalgie!

The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, until it was destroyed on 9 November 1993 by Croat forces during the CroatBosniak War. Subsequently, a project was set in motion to reconstruct it, and the rebuilt bridge opened on 23 July 2004.

A lot of these pictures are a reminder that war sucks. There are builders, and there are destroyers.
Thankfully the builders prevail most days.

(5,788 posts)bridge where I had one of the best red wines I had ever had. Asked the server what it was, wrote it down, and went to the market to find it. Success! It was 50 cents a bottle! Bought 2 cases would bring one out for dinner when visiting/staying with family or friends on the trip. But - I would only bring it out already opened, for dinner, because the wine didn't have a cork but a bottle cap! This was late 80's ...
Invariably there were raves, and then I would reveal the cap
Broke my heart when the bridge was destroyed - have not been back to see the new one. Thanks for posting.
