If you wish to hide your character, do not play golf. Percy Boomer, golf pro

Dana Milbank reviews trump's golfing in Washington Post.

Some excerpts:

He breaks rules, exaggerates scores and ignores the game’s decorum.

“Trump will sometimes respond to a shot he duffed by simply playing a second ball and carrying on as if the first shot never happened,” SI reports. “In the parlance of the game, Trump takes floating mulligans, usually more than one during a round. Because of them it is impossible to say what he has actually shot on any given day, according to 18 people who have teed it up with Trump over the last decade.”

He drives his cart on greens and tee boxes. He talks through other players’ shots. He “doesn’t play a round of golf so much as narrate it, his commentary peppered with hyperbole,” SI reports. He says he’s attracted to the game by “walking down all those beautiful fairways,” but he only rides in a cart.

Maybe Trump has a chip on his shoulder because the old-boy golf clubs wouldn’t admit the gauche showman. So he built his own. Now the populist Trump boasts that he’s “the best golfer of all the rich people.”

Or maybe he can’t help himself. Not satisfied being a very good golfer, he shaves scores, boasts of championships un-won and tears up greens with carts — because he can.

Because he can. Just like he does in the white house.

The great game of Golf has an ambassador like Jordan Spieth because Trumps very name alone is a embarrassment to the game. Beyond golf he's a joke in general. The mention of Percy Boomer in the heading however was a great reminder that there are great characters and people associated with this great game.
For any people who love the game, Percy's book is a must read.

I've been playing since I was 9 and I can't help but love the game.

I've always loathed Trump ever since I made the mistake of watching the first season of The Apprentice. He proved to me again that he is utterly without redeeming features.

I read this article yesterday and let me state something obvious to me. Trump is not a golfer. He is someone that plays a golf-like game.

While he can drive the ball well and reportedly putts pretty well he isn't playing golf. Anyone that has played the game for awhile knows that it isn't a game of do-overs and that that reported low single digit handicap he boasts of is a vanity handicap.

I've taken a lot of money from competitors that had a vanity handicap by agreeing to the bet but only if the rules are followed to the letter (they had to play in my group). No mulligans, no gimmies, lost balls played as lost balls etc.. These guys that said they shot in the low 80s watched their scores soar into the high 90s while I shot my 84 or 85. I always played by the rules because that is the genius of the game. Almost anyone with decent eye hand coordination can hit some good shots. But can you string together one good shot after another, recover well from your mistakes, and keep your head in the game for the full 18? It isn't easy. To make it easy you have to cheat.

And that is what this piece tells me. Trump cheats. At golf, at business, and at politics. Finally it looks like it might catch up to him and his criminal family.

BTW, the grab'em by the pussy thing disgusted me but I was not surprised. But when I saw the clip of him driving a golf cart on the green I was utterly shocked. No real golfer would do that (whether they own the course or not). It showed an overall lack of respect for the game, for his membership, and for the revered norms of the game.

Why this shocked me I don't know. It's just another norm being ignored. This kind of ignorant, unthinking, uncaring behavior is why he'll never be invited to join Augusta, Pine Valley, Shinnecock...

That is why he's not playing golf. He can't. His vanity won't let him. He can't bring himself to accurately fill out a score card.

No one who loved the game would disrespect it like he does. A golfer driving his cart across the green is like a baseball player peeing on home plate. It is unthinkable and gross. And I don't even like golf. But I respect the game and good golfers like my husband.
