How sad for them and yet they will still buy that $6 loaf of bread. They will still buy expensive furniture and clothing.

The reason is no different than the addict who is ashamed if his/her drug use and does everything to hide it while fooling no one. It is encasing one self in delusion while indulging. Guilt and shame are a huge aspect of the addict psyche.

Poor things, so uncomfortable and ashamed by their obscene wealth--and there's absolutely *nothing* they can do to assuage their guilt.

But there is no way to do that, is there? (I don't really need a smilie, do I?)

I especially liked the part about how making it ok to be wealthy as long as the person is morally good prevents us from talking about the system that has created such massive economic inequality.

It makes me think of our daughter and son-in-law. They''re doing quite okay and probably share much of the same attitudes, work for their money, spend it carefully. I suspect she doesn't mention a lot of expenditures to me, the same as these people don't to their maids for much the same reason.

I know that they were uneasy when remodeling of their new home ran over $150,000 because they didn't think blowing that kind of money was appropriate, on remodeling or anything else. But they had the money and a list of wants for the home they plan to at least finish raising their children in, and there's been a great price inflation in upper-scale consumer goods right in line with inflation of incomes.
