A Year Later, The Shock Of Trump's Win Hasn't Totally Worn Off In Either Party

Republicans had watched Donald Trump unleash powerful forces inside their party for more than a year. On Election Day last year, the question for many inside the GOP was how to deal with those forces once Trump had lost.

Few had figured out what it would mean for the party if he won.

Democrats were planning. There were lists of cabinet secretaries and the challenge of breaking the deadlock that set in between President Obama and the GOP Congress once President Hillary Clinton was in office.

Few had figured out what it would mean for the party if she lost.

Over the past year, Republicans have struggled to come together and govern effectively. Democrats have struggled to unite around a common cause, or move on from bitter infighting. But both parties may finally be figuring out how to exist in the Trump era.

The emotional trauma has been real. My faith in humanity shattered. My concept of Justice and “what goes around comes around” shattered and my belief that we as humans learn from our mistakes from the past shattered. My personal revelation that the far left and far right are/were damn near indistinguishable in so many ways was shocking. My ability to comprehend the world around me and my humanistic ideals daily questioned.

Thoughts of what could have been bring ovewhelming sadness. The revelation of all the actors that played a part in the demise of our standard bearer disheartening. The idea that federal judgeships will be filled with right wing conservatives for the next decades due to a potential speech to Goldman Sachs and use of a email server is maddening bordering on full blown psychosis.

If we keep treating lies as protected speech, this is what we can expect in perpetuity.

(Also, the staggering amount of free air time given to Trump during the campaign was unforgivable)
