What if you could create a school from scratch consult the experts, design the space, hire the teachers and incorporate all the latest research into how children think, move, develop and learn?
What would it look like?
Annie Koch wondered.
And now she and her husband are building it.

(5,240 posts)education should not be a requirement. You can either afford school or beg for a scholarship. They want to eliminate child labor laws and any minimum wage. It's all bootstraps all the time, unless you have the money to send your children to school.

(4,429 posts)When we were thinking of where to move, I considered the Sudbury School for my daughter

but we decided against it (she loved the idea!). We opted for a sort of hybrid model. She has regular classes, but the school has a commitment to following her passions (they'll find a way to provide what she needs at the school or in the community to do it). If it's acting, building things, science, math - art - whatever. You work to uncover what you love and they'll build that into your day.
The emphasis is not on grades - though there are grades - teachers are pretty flexible. Also they are flexible when assignments are due (it's about teaching individual kids, not getting them to take tests). So, there's not so much pressure.
She loves it.

(1 post)Does it seem coincidental that the whole premise of Koch's program (from the Miami Herald) smells very much like James Clavell's "The Children's Story"?
