Der Spiegel: Time for Europe to Join the Resistance

As an American living abroad I See a lot of European press that most Americans probably don't. But even in that context I am surprized this hasn't become a big deal:

Time for Europe to Join the Resistance

The most shocking realization, however, is one that affects us directly: The West as we once knew it no longer exists. Our relationship to the United States cannot currently be called a friendship and can hardly be referred to as a partnership. President Trump has adopted a tone that ignores 70 years of trust. He wants punitive tariffs and demands obedience. It is no longer a question as to whether Germany and Europe will take part in foreign military interventions in Afghanistan or Iraq. It is now about whether trans-Atlantic cooperation on economic, foreign and security policy even exists anymore. The answer: No.

Having lived in Europe for 15 years I doubt I'd ever move back. It would be a huge drop in quality of life.

Europe has long seen the US as a mixed bag... look at the Iraq War... they sacrificed a lot, and still are, and what did it get them? Nothing.

It has gone along with the US re: Israel for years, despite it's population being largely anti-Israel.

This was ALWAYS going to happen, in some ways, because the US makes a lot of dodgy decisions and has done for decades.

Trump kickstarted a process many here thought was inevitable, but would take years... instead, it's been very quick and very dramatic.

The U.S. under trump is no longer worthy of their support. I hope they follow through on this, with a vengeance. Things won't get better until the entire world aligns itself against our fascist leadership.

As is Asia.

They have decided to work AROUND the US and pray that Trump is gone soon. They've decided to ignore the US' foreign policy wishes, or give the US illusory victories, and just hope that the US comes back to its senses... but...

They've also started creating systems that don't require the US, because they truly are starting to believe that Trump isn't an anomaly.
