The NFL has gotten things wrong before, but in the recent history of this league, it has gotten fewer things more horribly, disgracefully, stupidly, terribly wrong than what it decided to do Wednesday in trying to half-heartedly stop players from protesting during the national anthem.
In a statement released by the league, team owners decided that starting this season, players can stay in the locker room during the anthem. If players take a knee to protest, say, unarmed black and brown people being unjustly shot by law enforcement, commissioner Roger Goodell can potentially fine both teams and players.
Essentially, the league is trying to shove the protests out of sight by putting them in the locker room. And by fining players who want to publicly protest, it is also trying to make this a financial decision for players.
"We want people to be respectful of the national anthem," Goodell said in a press conference. "We want people to standthat's all personneland make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That's something we think we owe. [But] we were also very sensitive to give players choices."
But as protesters like Colin Kaepernick (who, along with Eric Reid, started the protests) have said, they are not protesting the anthem or the military; they are using the anthem to bring attention to racial injustice and the issue of police abuse of black and brown citizens.
Now, because of the NFL's ineptitude, the anthem controversy will be around a long time, and it will be messy, and ugly, and divisive. The union and the league will likely go to war, and swaths of America will fight over it.

(38,414 posts)This argument is ridiculous.. First Amendment vs NFL...
While the NFL may have its rights as an employer, to make this an issue is beyond stupid. This will end up in the courts and that is the last thing NFL needs. There are other sports competing with the boring NFL. The NFL..is really titled .."Time Out and TV Commercials NFL" That is who and what they are...I don't watch it much..so I really don't care. Let them argue about First Amendment Rights.
I will tune into an old movie...

(21,105 posts)I am sick of the "entitled" owners who cow tow to a fringe group of ass-hats.
It is also disingenuous of the networks to say that the low ratings are due to people not watching because players are kneeling. Look you fucking idiots, the low numbers could also be because boycotts of the backlash against kneeler's. But, it is so much easier to take the opposite viewpoint, so, that is the one you take. FU

(9,475 posts)I remember the Monday night game (Dallas at Arizona I believe) where the Dallas Cowboys started off on a knee before the anthem started and then then rose and stood when it did start - the RW'rs still had a hissy fit. That tells you right there that it has nothing to do with disrespecting the flag.
As a Packer fan I don't much care for Jerry Jones, but I'll give him credit for listening and reaching a compromise with his players.

Force a conversation.
Repeat, repeat, repeat until you don't have to.

Have EVERYONE on BOTH TEAMS take a knee during the anthem.
Problem solved.

What happens when the regular guy in the stands takes a knee or refuses to stand?
Screw the players and owners. The people should take a knee for the first game en mass across the nation.

(59,583 posts)As CTE evidence continues to strengthen, and as CTE death tolls continue to rise, they will slowly throttle the sport's only future - aspiring young players, who increasingly won't be there any more to be fed into the sports-industrial complex.
It will take 10 or 20 years, I'd imagine, but the trend is already in place.
