"Is The Food Industry Killing Us?"

http://www.abc.net.au/health/thepulse/stories/2006/08/24/1722828.htm
"...Unhealthy foods are still marketed at adults and particularly children. Labelling doesn't help because most people don't understand what the labels mean. The exercise programs run by the food companies are window dressing, and no have no effect. Fresh nutritional food is getting more expensive relative to manufactured foods. We're eating more and more manufactured food.

And we're continuing to put on weight - between 0.5 to 2 kg/year per person, say the MJA authors...Just to burn off this extra amount we'd need to walk briskly for 80 to 90 minutes daily, or alternatively cut out sugar drinks and keep out fat in our diet to below 20 per cent of total intake (this is lower than the usually recommend minimum of 30 per cent)...There's no way as a population we'd voluntarily be capable of this, say the authors.

Education programs and advice from doctors isn't enough. Food industry self-regulation isn't working either, and won't work, because it's against the food companies' interests. It can only ever be a token measure. At the end of the day, companies' responsibilities are to their shareholders, not to the health of the populace. Profits take precedence..."

I try but it's pervasive in the food chain plus the more nutritious food is more expensive.

a bag of chips often costs twice as much as a bag of dried beans, and the beans will provide way more servings plus each serving holds off hunger far longer.

That's just one example ... milk is cheaper than ice cream, homemade yogurt is cheaper than the HFCS packed yogurt, etc.

And in general, the more nutrient dense your food is, the less of it your body needs to consume before feeling hungry again.
