The Republicans' grim 2018 is obvious when compared with past cycles

One of the tricky things about assessing midterm elections is that they are much more complicated than, say, a presidential race. In a presidential contest, there are two major-party candidates vying for victory in 50 states. Or, really, in about 10 states, depending on the year. In a midterm, each of the 435 seats in the House are contested, with up to 870 candidates from the two major parties. (That number is always lower, since some candidates run unopposed.)

As is the case with states in a presidential year, not all of those 435 seats are likely to switch hands. But scores will. What's more, while in a presidential year you can look at polling for the two candidates nationally and get a sense for how states might vote (though this is, uh, not a perfect system), guessing the winner of particular swing House races based solely on national House polling — the generic congressional ballot — is a whole different beast.

Happily there are sites which go through each race on a near-daily basis and assess how likely it is that each seat will end up being held by the same party after voting concludes. One such site is the Cook Political Report, which does regular ratings of House races on a number of different metrics, offering a sense of how the overall national picture might look after Election Day.

Cook's current ratings offer a very specific sense of how things might look in the 2018 election. In short: Bad for the Republican Party.

They protect putin , trump and mob bosses over this country , and the American people they'll suffer defeat at the polls, and weaken their party , especially after trump daily drags them closer to hell. Voters are abandoning them now, and they know it. Too corrupt, and are liars.

Polling likely voters can be misleading simply because of the many ways voting is suppressed and otherwise distorted. How many voters were turned away in the last national election? How many voters were dropped from rolls? How many voters couldn't find out where to vote, because of late changes?

We need an overwhelming turnout to overcome the cheats. It's a war and we need mobilization to avoid having this shit normalized.

confident that Hillary was the next President. What a shock waking up to the orange nightmare. The gop has so many tricks up their sleeves, they even got the worst person EVER to get into the WH elevated to that position. Obviously, the presidency is not a position of respect and dignity to them. Just as Grover Nordquist stated "We (meaning the gop) just need someone in the Oval Office capable of signing bills" Well, they got him, and what a mess they have created. Of course they got their tax bills passed, and now are in the process of destroying all social services for ordinary citizens. Gotta pay for their tax credits somehow, right?

rump. They didn't properly vet rump, they overlooked his obvious character flaws, and let a monster run for president. They aided and abetted this criminal to the highest office in the land, and heads will fall, when we take everything back (dems).

They may try and explain it away, but a crime is a crime is a crime. Can't color the truth and criminals go to jail as they should, for crimes they commit.
