The Russia-Ukraine crisis requires a steady hand and moral leadership. Why can't Trump provide it?
President Donald Trump cited the ongoing naval standoff between Russia and Ukraine as the reason he canceled a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this past weekend.
We view this as prudent. Appearing to appease Russia, as happened in the Putin-Trump summit in Helsinki, with Moscow's military adventurism growing daily, would not be in the interest of the U.S. or our European allies.
Sadly, however, Trump's business dealings with Russia and the revelations of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections have once again led many to question the president's motives.
On the same day Trump canceled the Putin meeting, his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to a charge from the special counsel of lying to Congress about Trump's real-estate dealings with Moscow during the 2016 campaign.
