Hate makes a comeback in the Pacific Northwest

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS
May 26, 2019

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Nearly two decades after the Aryan Nations’ Idaho compound was demolished, far-right extremists are maintaining a presence in the Pacific Northwest.

White nationalism has been on the rise across the U.S., but it has particular resonance along the Idaho-Washington border, where the Aryans espoused hate and violence for years.

The neo-Nazi group was based near Hayden Lake, Idaho, starting in the 1970s, and eventually was bankrupted in a lawsuit brought by local activists and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Its compound was seized, and supporters dispersed.

But a series of incidents in recent weeks show far-right sentiments never really left the conservative region. In the county that is home to Hayden Lake, for instance, Republicans last month passed a measure expressing support for U.S. entry of a prominent Austrian far-right activist who was investigated for ties to the suspected New Zealand mosque gunman.

In 2018, at least nine hate groups operated in the region of Spokane and northern Idaho, including Identity Evropa, Proud Boys, ACT for America and America’s Promise Ministries, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. The center does not track how many members belong to each group.

I'm about 150 miles west. Very red, but with a hardy blue contingent.

Our congressional district was combined with Issaquah, a suburb of Seattle, and we elelcted a super Dem congresswoman, Dr. Kim
Schrier, in 2018. 1st Dem from here in YEARS!!

Article fails to mention attempt led by Shea for E. Washington to break off from W. Washington and create its own state of “Liberty.“

Makes my blood run cold!

start pestering those of us west of the Cascades for help. Fresh water, trained irrigation technicians, funding for roads and bridges (will 'Liberty' have taxes? I doubt it...) food aid in the face of crop failure, advice on curbing the sudden population explosion and prevalence of STD's due to no sex ed, no abortion, no contraception, etc.

Blue intelligence and industriousness beat Red ignorance and fecklessness every time.

The State of Liberty is a proposed U.S. state to be formed out of Eastern Washington. Enabling legislation was introduced in the Washington State House of Representatives in January 2019. It was proposed by Washington State Representative Matt Shea as House Memorials in 2015 and 2017, and was the subject of the Douglas County Republicans' "Lincoln Day dinner" keynote speech in May 2018 at the Wenatchee Convention Center. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Liberty

as the 1970s though I heard about the Skinheads in the 80s I guess. Beautiful areas from what I've seen which includes Snoqualmie, Coeur D'Alene, Jackson, WY, Seattle and Vancouver. And very white places esp. Idaho from what I recall, no offense.

The weirdos are certainly revved up these days, cross currents in Europe, Brazil. I don't do fascists well, family history.

"Republicans attend rally to carve out new Christian state: ‘It’s either going to be bloodshed or Liberty State’ RawStory, May 24, 2019.
The far-right gathered in Spokane Valley to push for the creation of Liberty State, a 51st US state that is intended to be something of a wildlife sanctuary for Christian conservatives, the Spokesman-Review reported Friday. “The Liberty State Gala drew about 200 people to the CenterPlace Regional Event Center in Spokane Valley.

Supporters of the new Christian conservative state – which would span parts of Washington and Oregon as well as Idaho, Montana and Wyoming – raised money by auctioning pies and other desserts,” the newspaper reported.

One of the speakers was notorious far-right Republican state Rep. Matt Shea. Shea published a “biblical war” manifesto last fall...
