Lawmakers Push For 'Red Flag' Laws To Take Guns Away From People In Crisis

In his response Monday to mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, President Trump called for an expansion of state laws that temporarily prevent someone in crisis from buying or possessing a gun.

A flurry of states have recently passed such laws known as extreme risk protection orders that allow a court to intervene when someone shows warning signs of impending violence. Although the laws also sometimes called "red flag" laws are widely supported by gun control groups and mental health advocates, others note that the measures alone won't solve the nation's gun violence epidemic.

Trump said the shooter in the Parkland, Fla., massacre last year "had many red flags against him, and yet nobody took decisive action; nobody did anything. ... We must make sure that those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety do not have access to firearms, and that if they do, those firearms can be taken through rapid due process."

About half of those who commit mass shootings show warning signs that they were a threat to themselves or others, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, which advocates for stricter measures to reduce gun violence.

1. A person can be detained for 72 hours without charges

Guns should be allowed to taken away at least until the case can be presented to a judge.

2. When a 19 year old kid buys a dozen guns and thousands of rounds would that be a "Red Flag"? No,

Because we have decided that we can't legally track gun and ammunition sales, because it will violate 2nd Amendment.

We will be monitoring buyers of video games before we start "Red Flag"ing gun humpers.

5. I've been saying for years that disarming anyone arrested for domestic ...

violence or anyone with a peace warrant or an order of protection would significantly lower the murder rate.

The police come to your house with a firearm warrant and take your weapons until its been determined that you represent no threat with a special consideration over how many individual guns you own.

4. Just turning up at the gun shop to by one of the "long rifles" is a big fat red flag.
