Donald Trump's sanity is not the question. The real issue is how he got into office

From Gary Younge in The Guardian:

Donald Trump’s sanity is not the question. The real issue is how he got into office

The president is an emblem of free-market, white supremacist nationalism. And it won the election.

How did he come to be in the office? He represents the worst in us and one great support.

It didn't just happen. They opposed Democrats and pushed their own power at every turn. Finally they saw a path to having it all. It was a march to the right. Talk radio, media conglomeration, state level party hacks, voter apathy, religious right and pulpit fascism - they had every lever figured out.

The question is how do you get them out of there.

it's the hate filled dunderheads who voted for him;
and people removed from voter rolls,
and the gerrymandered districts,
and the long lines waiting to vote in certain neighborhoods,
and denying out of state students the vote,
and.......

How did Trump get elected? Why does he still have the support of roughly 35%-38% of Americans?

Trump didn’t just screw up a little bit, he tore up our institutions, ignored laws, rejected the Constitution, promoted White Nationalism, chose the least qualified for most positions, betrayed our troops, shamed us every time he spoke, practiced nepotism on steroids, on and on....

The United States of America is holding children in cages. Imagine.

Why did this happen, and how? I believe it happened little by little by little. We overlooked a lot. We accepted things we never should have, or at least didn’t raise our voices enough. Racism, gun violence, homelessness, economic inequality, and more. For-profit prisons, crumbling infrastructure, obscenely overpriced health care system. We got coarsened. Some of us gave up.
Folks I know have had enough and are demanding system-wide changes.....not back to yesterday or 1955, but a complete overhaul.

And that's a separate problem from how he got into the White House.
