We Democrats absolutely must win the 2020 election...

My thinking, in bullet points:

1- Barring resignation or death, Trump will stand for election during 2020.
2- No one is seriously proposing that he will be convicted in the Senate. He should be, but, this won't happen.
3- There is a possibility he could win again. Why ?
3a- Russian interference, again.
3b- MAGA voters turn out in huge numbers in battleground states
3c- Our candidate is not as strong as he or she should be.
3d- The electoral college math goes his way
3e- Our voters do not turn out in huge numbers, for various reasons.
4- If Trump wins again, I have no doubt he will do everything possible to destroy DOJ, CIA, FBI and the rest of the intelligence community. Yes, the agencies will still be standing but, internally, they will be beholden to him.
5- If he wins again, he will defy any attempt by Congress to exercise oversight.
6- The 2024 election ? I can't see Trump trying for a 3rd term (illegal), but I can see his MAGA followers to nominate a fascist who is much more sophisticated at undermining democracy.

I hope I'm wrong. I really do. If Trump wins in November 2020, I seriously despair for my country in a way I never have before.

these legislatures will be determining the gerrymander for another decade, as well as calling the inevitable constitutional convention and appointing its delegates.

will such a convention preserve presidential term limits? don't count on it.

trump will not be removed by the senate. he will run again, and may well win for all of the reasons in point 3.

if he wins he will continue to destroy the government, and not only the agencies you list, but any agency or program that interferes with his rapacious privatization of everything.

congress has proven incapable of oversight. trump does not care that no future president will be controllable. that is not his problem.

there are many ways that an uncontrollable (uncheckable, unbalancable) unitary executive can stay in power past 2025 and beyond. there is no doubt that this is his ambition.

I derive no pleasure from stating this. my best hope is that he chokes on a hamburder.

to flip the Texas House of Representatives. "This is where it all starts", he says and he is quite correct.

I know he will be up here in the Fort Worth area to support the 5 State House candidates who are in a position to flip their districts. These are districts which went for Beto and came within single digits of flipping in 2018. If all our voters had voted straight ticket, many of them would have won.

We have outstanding candidates, and Beto's efforts will help get out the vote. If we have that vote, we will flip. Other Democrats on those ballots will also benefit, and we have candidates up and down the ballot.

it would be great irony if they call their convention and a majority of the delegates are appointed by democrats.

Whatever they see in him doesn't exist in anyone else they might even consider nominating. Trump is a reality-TV sleazeball who appeals to all of the sleazeball reality-TV fans out there. No one else will be able to match his poisoned charisma.

Reagan's admirers knew him from Hollywood, liked that he looked good in a tuxedo, and could shake a leg on the dance floor with Nancy. Those people are all dead. Now repubs want someone who is shabby, poorly-clothed, ill-at-ease, paralyzingly stupid, and as destructive as a dirty nuke.

Adolf Hitler's successor as Fuhrer was Admiral Karl Doenitz, a colorless, humorless, drab naval officer and technocrat. He lasted a few weeks in the job before Germany surrendered, inspired precisely no one outside his own little circle, and is little more than an historical footnote to his crazed predecessor.
