Democrats looked ready to unify. And then Hillary Clinton had to go and raise her hand

On Monday, the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates who have run a pretty chill primary, all things considered linked arms at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day rally in South Carolina. Their message was clear: Even as the race narrows and the Iowa caucuses loom, the field is joined in common purpose. Or enough common purpose to keep things civil.
It was a nice twenty-something hours. Because this morning, former candidate Hillary Clinton popped up to zing Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders even demurring on whether shed support him were he to win the nomination. In an upcoming Hulu series, Clinton says Sanders was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done. When asked if that assessment still holds, Clinton told the Hollywood Reporter, in an interview published this morning, Yes, it does.
Its mind-boggling to see a woman against whom likability was so ably weaponized argue that Sanders is unlikable. Its particularly absurd for Clinton, who was so frustrated by Sanders late support of her as the Democratic presidential nominee, to say that shes unsure if she would support him should he get the nomination. (Id vote for a sentient sock should it win the Democratic nomination, or even former Vice President Joe Biden, should it come to that, which is to repeat myself.) Its wild to accuse a competitors campaign of relentless negativity while being relentlessly negative three years later about that same campaign.
Meanwhile, the current candidates, including Sanders, have largely kept their messages to the issues. When Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warrens campaign circulated the rumor that Sanders had said a woman could not win the presidency, Sanders denied the exchange, all while praising Warren as a candidate and a person an exceptionally difficult line to walk. When a prominent Sanders supporter published an op-ed last week saying that Biden represented Washington, D.C., corruption, Sanders immediately went on television and said, It is absolutely not my view that Joe is corrupt in any way. And Im sorry that that op-ed appeared.

The author closes by stating that the only mention of Clinton by Sanders has been of him praising her.

What next? Obama calls out all Dems as namby pamby nappy wetters?

Read the anti-Bernie stuff here as fear. If you understand that's what it is, it helps. Remember that even on the leftish spectrum in a right wing country like the USA, corporatism dies hard.

Yep. There's the Sanders campaign .. just killin' it with sweetness and light .. making the news day after day, and just sticking to the issues. It's been a real "kumbaya" moment I can tell ya'.
The OP kindly offers "more at the link" .. but I think I've kinda' already gotten the drift ...

(6,043 posts)Clinton stated quite clearly in her tweet yesterday that she would support the Democratic nominee.
One problem with Melissa Batchelor Warnke's contributing article to the Los Angeles Times was her misrepresentation of what Clinton said in her interview. Had she contacted Clinton for clarification or even directly quoted Clinton instead of stated that Clinton "was demurring," or if she had not claimed in her article that Clinton said she was unsure if she would support him(Sanders) if he should he get the nomination" --Warnke would not have misrepresented.
I am being kind in calling this a misrepresentation. If Donald Trump or Sean Hannity wrote this, I would call it a lie.
For the record here is Clinton's tweet:

I thought everyone wanted my authentic, unvarnished views!
But to be serious, the number one priority for our country and world is retiring Trump, and, as I always have, I will do whatever I can to support our nominee.
Clinton has been unrelenting in supporting the Democratic Party. I wish I could say the same for Sanders or the Stein supporters he has hired.

Frankly, that statement by Hillary printed in the Hollywood whatever article yesterday was her being authentic. Enough said.

(26 posts)This is nothing new. Hillary said this before. Bernie is full of shit. He hides behind his supporters when confronted about his dirty politics. I am not a fan. But I will support and vote for him if he's nominated.

She is brilliant. She has the right to speak. And she speaks the truth.

(11,094 posts)Beating Trump will require every single vote we can possibly get, including votes from Bernie Sanders supporters should he not be the nominee. And, there are more Independent voters than Democrats in this country. We can not win without their support.
The divide between establishment candidates and their challengers from the Left is nothing new, but this would be a good time to set that aside....however temporary.

(4,709 posts)Her timing sucks. Is there some karma involved for the way her DNC treated the Sanders campaign in 2016? The thing is, there is a shitload of positive campaigning calling out for the gravitas she brings, perhaps were all better served if she rolls up her sleeves and carries water for those she does support and lets those she doesnt support campaign as they will.
Well said. Thanks!

(1,514 posts)I voted Bernie in the primary back in 2016, voted Hillary in the general election. I will do the same this year; support Bernie, and if he is not the nominee, vote for the Dem. My point is Hillary should not do anything that could help Trump win reelection.

A lot of people take that as a ringing endorsement that he's not the type of politician that is bought by private interests.
This from a candidate in 2016 who (along with trump) had the *worst* popular approval rating compared to Berine's *best* approval rating. https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/329404-poll-bernie-sanders-countrys-most-popular-active-politician

Poll: Bernie Sanders countrys most popular active politician
https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/329404-poll-bernie-sanders-countrys-most-popular-active-politician
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) is the countrys most popular active politician, underscoring his importance to the Democratic Party as it seeks to rebuild in the wake of a disastrous 2016 election cycle.
Sanders is viewed favorably by 57 percent of registered voters, according to data from a Harvard-Harris survey provided exclusively to The Hill. Sanders is the only person in a field of 16 Trump administration officials or congressional leaders included in the survey who is viewed favorably by a majority of those polled.
White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon is far and away the least popular political figure in the poll, with only 16 percent viewing him favorably, compared with 45 percent having a negative view of him.

Of course it is acknowledged Clinton's remarks referred to the other senators. This is among the people.
operative phrase: A lot of people take that as a ringing endorsement that he's not the type of politician that is bought by private interests.

I hope going forward that posters will make clear when something is published as an opinion piece. They are often hit pieces cloaked as news. Just my, ahem, opinion.
that's why it was posted in "editorials and other articles." Editorials means "opinion."
