I have had the privilege of working with the Secret Service details of two Presidents. The Clinton detail was all business and the agents were young and fit. The Ford detail was much older and the night before the event they wanted me to take them to a local strip club. I personally thought that with the Ford detail the dark glasses were for more than preventing seeing whom they were looking at.
