US warns Venezuela of consequences if Guaido harmed

The United States on Thursday warned Venezuela's rulers of consequences if opposition leader Juan Guaido is not allowed to return safely from a visit to Washington, where he enjoyed pledges of robust support.
In one sign that some saw as retaliation, authorities in Caracas threw into jail six oil executives with joint US and Venezuelan nationality, two months after allowing them to shift to house arrest.
Elliott Abrams, the US envoy leading the drive to oust leftist leader Nicolas Maduro, warned that the United States was "prepared" with unspecified actions if Guaido faces trouble.
"We hope that the regime makes the calculation, particularly after this trip, that the support for Guaido is strong and that the counter-reaction to any move against him would make it a mistake for the regime," Abrams told reporters.
"We're very concerned about it and we hope that he will return safely," he said.

(23,336 posts)Guaidó's outlived his usefulness, as even Latin American right-wingers will admit. He's become a joke - like a safety blanket the neo-cons tug around everywhere they go for no real reason.
Dead, however, he could indeed be very useful to them.
It would give Cheeto and his Cold-warniks the perfect pretext to invade Venezuela.
And just in time for the elections this November.

(102,778 posts)They are apartheid supporters. That's all anyone needs to know about them, well that and mercenary army Erik has assembled.
Oh and that's Erik FUCKING Prince... I think I misspelled his name above.

(23,336 posts)I bet his real last name is Prinzbowski, or something like that, and his father or grandfather felt they needed to Anglicize it.
Like the Drumpfs.

(23,336 posts)I hasten to add that I'm certain most Afrikaners are good people (I've met only a few over the years; they were all nice) - but it's common knowledge that many of the most extreme Apartheid supporters were, in fact, Afrikaner.
You know, some say there's good reason to believe that HIV is actually a genetically-engineered form of a much more innocuous simian virus - weaponized by the Apartheid regime in the 1970s.
I remember reading they called it the "Black Bomb," as it was intended to kill only Africans. They learned only too late that (surprise!) we're all the same on the inside, and that HIV kills black and white alike.
It was said this was the real reason the international community forced the Apartheid regime to step down.
Is all that true? We'll probably never know. But as murderous as they were, I'm pretty sure they at least considered it.

Apparently his ambition didn't allow him time to think things over.
He actually looks as if he has died already, standing beside the Orange Nightmare. Maybe they killed him already and just dragged him out for the photo shoot.

(23,336 posts)Reminds of the time Bush's Cuban-exile goons plotted to have Manuel Rosales, the recently-defeated Venezuelan presidential candidate in 2006, assassinated in order to justify an invasion of Venezuela (remember that one?).
The 2006 mid-terms were around the corner, and Bush had planned on invading Iran instead - but the Penatgon persuaded him against it (amazingly).
So Venezuela made for a convenient second choice.
All this sounds so familiar...

Such a fine man!
Sounds like something right out of the Joint Chiefs' of Staff Operation Northwoods Cuba playbook which JFK rejected not so long before his assassination!
Just the right trigger for fascists, to launch a bloody invasion.
A U.S. American company created a video game during Dubya, using the background of an invasion of Venezuela, too, to program "minds" to think of leftist Venezuela in terms of the enemy just waiting to be demolished.

(23,336 posts)A video game.
If they'd spent half the energy and imagination they spend on destabilizing and causing problems for others, on instead being helpful and a force for good (like only the U.S. can), they'd have a lot more world's people on their side.
Someday perhaps.
