To my children, who are still very young and learning,
Your mother won’t let me listen to NPR with you in the car anymore because she’s afraid you’ll hear things and ask questions we’re not ready to answer.
We have to raise you in a more complex world than the one we grew up in, and I’m not always sure we’re prepared for the job. But until we’re all ready, I’ll put my best answers here.

But I’ve come to believe there are truly bad people in the world. You will inevitably meet some of them. And the way you will know them is by this: Bad people aren’t merely awful, but also they turn the people around them into the worst versions of themselves.
And such a person is our president.
