Viewpoints: Democrats pick pragmatism over consistency

In many ways, Bernie Sanders is the anti-Trump. And, in important ways, he ran his campaign as the anti-Biden.

Sanders bowed out of the Democratic nomination race April 8, repeating his runner-up status from four years earlier. His two runs at the White House have cemented his legacy as a consistent standard-bearer for progressive policies.

The veteran democratic socialist possessed a rare quality for a political candidate in this age of Trumpian fickleness. He is a politician whose actions and beliefs have remained steadfast over time and across campaigns.

But in the current political moment, it appears the Democratic electorate longs less for a politician who is consistent from day to day than one who can provide pragmatic leadership to unseat the vacillating Trump.

1. Consistent, maybe, but naive to the nth degree. America will not elect a socialist.

back in the '60s and that was that. I don't think he ever listened to anyone outside his own ideological bubble; he just dismissed other opinions as wrong and not worth considering.

Biden and Obama both would have been moderate Republicans up until the 1980's. Since 1980, when in charge, the GOP pushes everything to the right. The Dems get in, hold the line for eight years, then the Republicans regain the office and shove further to the right. We lose ground every eight years. Now look where we are. The Democratic Party is right of Center with their policies and anyone that promotes something for the people is labeled a Socialist or a Leftist Radical. No need to look deeper than how AOC is portrayed in the media. Our countries politics are so far right, we are closer to Fascism than Democracy.

The coronavirus is terrible. Trump and his administration are pillaging the treasury right in from of our eyes and getting away with it. He has mismanaged this whole episode horribly and his approval ratings are barely moving downward. How many thousands must die before the media and population see what a fraud, and shyster he is. Taxpayers will be paying for this for decades while the rich keep getting tax cuts. But, when Bernie, AOC, or even Warren mention something to help out the people, they get branded zealots.

The oil companies have made $billions a year for decades, two bad months and Trump is talking bailouts for them. Oil companies should be getting shut down, not gifted money. Climate change is not going away, and will make this virus look like a picnic in 10 to 20 years. But we still cannot elect someone that will actually CHANGE things because it is too radical of an idea.

May I remind you it was under Obama the US was part of the climate change accord.

Obamacare while not perfect brought heath insurance to many people who did not have it.

Change is always incremental.

but what she called herself—a democratic socialist. As far as when the repugs get in they cause a recession and the Democrats have to get in and bring the economy back. It happened with Bush and Obama save the economy from a deep, deep hole and it's happening again with trump's abysmal admin.
