Among First Ladies, how will Melania be remembered?

By Tom Burke / Herald columnist

Eleanor Roosevelt was FDR’s eyes and ears and legs. To compensate for the president’s polio she ceaselessly toured the country and the world helping fight the Great Depression and support victory in WWII. She framed issues, formulated policy and advocated for the underprivileged.

And in addition to her political and social duties as First Lady, Ms. Roosevelt wrote, for 27 years, a daily newspaper column, “My Day;” hosted a weekly radio program; wrote two monthly magazine columns; co-chaired the WWII Office of Civil Defense with Fiorello LaGuardia; held 348 press conferences while First Lady; successfully championed the cause of the black Tuskegee Airmen to actually fight in WWII combat; and was the nation’s first delegate to the United Nations.

Another First Lady, Dolly Madison, is famous for saving George Washington’s portrait when the British burned the White House during the War of 1812.

-snip-

Which brings us to today and what could be the most deadly and economically disastrous challenge in modern history: coronavirus and COVID-1. And Melania Trump.

Who?

You know, the First Lady. Melania. Trump. Barron’s mother.

The woman with three claims to fame: being Donald Trump third wife, posing nude for soft-porn magazines, and wearing a jacket shouting, “I really don’t care, do you?”

She mostly won’t be remembered at all. Everyone knows she’s just the con’s latest trophy wife. And she’ll divorce him as soon as he’s voted out. But trump has certainly poisoned NY for her.

Mrs. Roosevelt visited injured troops in the south pacific during WW2. My paternal grandfather was one of those people. There were complaints at the time that a war zone was no place for a woman. These complaints made him angry as he was very grateful for her visit and kind words. He said she was one of the most beautiful women he'd ever met. Not in terms of looks, but of character. I asked him if she'd run for president would he have voted for her. He said yes with without hesitation. He was an independent who voted for republicans over democrats most of the time, but I have no doubt he would've been appalled by the trumps. If he'd been alive in 2016 he wouldn't have voted for Captain Trumps. As for his wife Ms. Botox, she wouldn't have been fit to lick Eleanor's shoes or any of the other first ladies shoes for that matter.

He's a die-hardened Republican. His comment was profound.

He said, "She's really hot and I wish my wife looked that sexy!"

To me, that speaks volumes. I doubt he's alone in his thinking.

think either of them will be remembered as not much participation to document for the books
by either during their WH time

IMO Donald Trump is all about himself and his arm candy and spawn fade into the background in history .

Maybe the other flotus Ivanka will be remembered for her outrageous insertation into policy decision and her large WH influence along with husband Kushner .

That would be more worth noting then Melania or her son when there is nothing to write about

She's nobody, a non-entity, and has done nothing meaningful in her career or as first lady. Gone in January and immediately forgotten.

How many First Ladies do we remember? We tend to remember only the First Ladies (Spouses) of good Presidents.
