NEW YORK – I asked a media-savvy friend recently to guess what is the most-watched program on TV right now.

“Hannity’s show?” she offered.

It’s “World News Tonight” on ABC, I told her. “You know, with David Muir?”

A blank look followed.

It’s true. As news-hungry viewers seek credible information on the coronavirus pandemic, the ratings for ABC’s weeknight newscast is not only beating the likes of Sean Hannity on Fox News but also favorites like “The Voice,” “NCIS” and “60 Minutes.”

The other evening news programs — anchored by NBC’s Lester Holt and CBS’s Norah O’Donnell — are also on a roll.

These tightly edited, half-hour broadcasts distill the day’s events, at times providing an austere contrast to President Trump’s daily briefings, which are often airing simultaneously elsewhere.

“The answer to the anxiety people are feeling isn’t to deliver a portrait that is rosier than reality,” Muir told me this week.

1. I'd guess this is a result of their 24 hour news channel

It’s pretty good. It’s new so people are probably going to it as an alternative to the standard news channels.

2. When I watch the national news, I do watch Muir and ABC.

He conveys sincerity and empathy but also tries to highlight the good aspects of human beviour during this crisis.

3. CBS should bring back Dan Rather.

4. I haven't been watching "David Doomer," who

has a special talent for making “if it bleeds it leads” sound dramatically concerning.

Good that it’s not Hannity of course, but I hope ABC’s doing a responsible job. In studies of the three broadcast networks, ABC’s was the most conservative leaning. And conservative media grow their audiences by growing fear.

Of course, fair is appropriate at this time.
