In fact, the attempt often led to cries of outraged righteousness.
I can read Soviet books of humor and miss that they're humorous. The humor is just lame and flaccid, or it's so political against the usual enemies that it reads like a diatribe at the UN. Hard to find humor for a certain time frame--too dangerous to write, you could never tell when something that was okay last week is suddenly grounds for execution.
Who knew that it would be offensive to mock Megyn Kelly?
But the church scolds were no less diligent in rooting out every secret sin and showing exactly how exacting in their righteousness--esp. when imposed on others--they were. I think of this as a new congregation for the doctrine of the faith or NKVD, but one where everybody in the organization (and their acolytes) has a cell phone to document and punish those who fail to be properly conformed to the official doctrine.
And these are people who say they like freedom ... Just like the self-righteousness judgmental scolds in church basked in knowing that they loved sweet Jesus and were gentle and loving souls. (Still looking for the puke smilie ... until then )
