Trump, Barr threaten the rule of law

It gets more complicated by the minute.

The COVID-19 lockdown continues, and the potential for a “second wave” looms ominously over us all. This November’s presidential election is rapidly approaching, along with a host of concerns about security and integrity. Protests and strife surrounding the conduct of police, particularly the historic maltreatment of Black people, continued largely unabated. And a whole host of bad actors around the globe are running loose in the absence of a coherent American foreign policy.

Contending with this chaos can be overwhelming. But it would be much more manageable if the United States were buoyed by competent leadership.

Instead, President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr seem hellbent on assaulting America’s judicial system, the vitality of constitutional rule and threatening the country’s future. The latest example? The inexplicable and bizarre firing of Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Berman, known for pursuing cases against high-profile figures like sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein and controversial attorney Michael Avenatti, was reportedly investigating Mr. Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in relation to the Trump-Ukraine investigation.

In a hilariously inept imitation of the Saturday Night Massacre, Mr. Barr announced Mr. Berman’s resignation only to be undone by Mr. Berman’s own statement, informing the public that he had no intention of resigning. Mr. Trump and Mr. Barr then removed Mr. Berman from his position. The incompetence would almost be humorous if it were not so dangerous.
